Guest NiXPhoenix
Hi!I´ve a got a really peculiar problem with my file-extensions...When I save a jpg-picture internet explorer gives it the file extension *.jpeg . :(I have tried different sites, all with the same result. All previous pictures I´ve saved with the extension jpg.I searched for *.jpeg files and found out that the first file dated exactly one week back, 18/1-03.But the problem is that I can´t find any programs or changes that was made then... Recently installed both Quicktime and realplayer and of course I told both of them not to take "the privilege of playing files" over any other programs. Now I´ve uninstalled them both and re-booted - the problem is still here. You may ask yourself why this is so important to me... I´ve lots of pictures saved and don´t want any duplicates. If the files are from exactly the same sites with the same names this could be avoided easily, windows tells me that I already have the file and asks if I want to overwrite it... But not if the extensions differ.
Guest ellas
what o/s,mine on xp are all jpeg, unless someone knows better all I can suggest is rename the pictures when you save them to stop duplicates.

And I don´t like your suggestion. :P But thanks for the answer anyway.Of course I rename files sometimes, but to do it all the time? That´s just to much work. :(And sorting out duplicates isn´t too fun either. A format is a way to go, but I´d like to at least try and get rid of the problem in some other way first.Edit: All (except for these saved since last week) my jpeg-files in my big collection folders have the extension .jpg and the oldest of them date back to the time I was using 98 I think. Boris
Does .jpg still appear as a recognised file type ?If not - why not rename the suffix of all your .jpg files as .jpeg in one go using search and something like Properties Plus ?Then all will be the same. Guest ellas
pity you removed quicktime as its possible that could be the cause of your problems.

In explorer, I looked under tools and folder options... Found three types of jpeg-files, jpe, jpeg and jpg.The first one was "deletable", but not the other two. That's the only place I´ve seen where you can alter anything with the file extensions. :(But what do you mean by mass-altering the extensions? In the folder where I want all jpg files to be renamed to jpeg-files I should do a search on all files, right?*.jpgBut then what? Mark all of the files or?I think this sounds like a quite good solutions... 1 or 2GBs "lost" disc space aren´t that precious to me. :)

Boris
NiXPhoenixDownload the little freeware file "Properties Plus" from here :-http://www.ne.jp/asahi/cool/kish/I know its Japanese, but don't panic as its all in pukka English. I've used it happily for over 3 years now - no problems whatever !Install it and it adds a context "Properties Plus" option when you right click on any file(s).Use File Search *.jpg to find all your .jpg files, highlight all the photo ones you want not to be overwritten, right click the highlighted block, up pops the Properties Plus boxput an X in the "extension" box, change jpg to jpeg in the "extension" boxclick apply/OK and it should change every one you've highlighted to jpeg - in one go.Its a very very powerful little beast, because it can change all sorts of file attributes dates/times created/modified etc. So take care - because for however many files you have highlighted it will give them all their original name - but the properties e.g. file type/date/time showing in its display.I recommend you try a few sample ones first to see how it works ! :D
