Scarthy © ® ™ Posted October 27, 2003 Report Share Posted October 27, 2003 Hi all ;),I have had my Evesham PC for around 19months now. I have recently been having a noisy fan noise at startup. And also an occasional freezing of the BIOS checks at startup (before windows starts). When I restart the comp from this I always have to manually input the CPU clock speed as the bios seems to have lost it.I have tracked the noise down to the Northbridge cooling fan on my motherboard (ASUS A7V266-E). I have contacted Evesham asking them for a replacement fan and they have emailed me saying that my problem seems to be hardware related and that I should forward my address/ contact number so that an engineer can arrange a visit. They have also told me to back up all my data as it may be lost in the process...and the engineer won't be able to do this.What I want to know is...Will the engineer be replacing my motherboard? Is this what they do instead of replacing the fans? If so will it be 'like for like' with regards the manufacturer/ type etc?Also if anyone has had this happen to them in the past (replacing a motherboard), what does the procedure involve? I have all the windows updates, software etc etc installed already and want to know if I will lose anything? How will a different motherboard fair with my old settings (if a newer or different manufacturer is used).Thanx for any advise or suggestions (I have almost finished backing everything up just in case ;)). If your computer supplier can't supply one, the motherboard manufacturer will be able to.2. If your BIOS is losing its memory between bootings it may be a sign of a failed or failing battery.3. You ought to have a full backup anyway but, replacing a motherboard shouldn't, in principle, have any effect on the remainder of the hardware (disks etc.) You are probably being told that as a precaution in case something goes wrong. That's if it is a like for like replacement. If it is another model board or CPU, you will need to re-install Windows so you must have all your files and settings backed up.4. What I would do in a case like yours is back up everything personal to me and then have a complete, fresh install of the O/S and programs - start afresh with a clean machine, it will be all the better for that.Brian Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

-pops- Posted October 27, 2003 Report Share Posted October 27, 2003 I always use Abit motherboards and they will supply a Northbridge fan for £5·88 inc VAT.They are at:Abit Computer Corp LtdTech DeptUnit 324 - 26 Boulton RoadStevenageHertsSG1 4QXThey require the money in the form of a postal order. Scarthy © ® ™ Posted October 30, 2003 Author Report Share Posted October 30, 2003 Thanx guys.Update...Evesham rang yesterday saying that an engineer would be in the area today.Engineer came at 3pm'ish.Solution...The engineer fitted a 'heatsink' type cooler (instead of the fan based one) that came from an ASUS A7V333 motherboard.Time...15 minsNo backup required (yet...hehe) problem solved...
