D-Link DWL-120 and Netgear DG824M to share bb

Hi, recently I posted about upgrading to BB and splitting the connection.

Since Friday I have been a very happy customer with Pipex, especially as they said BB would be ready tomorrow!

I have one PC on XP connected directly to my Netgear Modem/Router via an ethernet cable. My Windows 98 PC has a D-Link Wireless card installed, which can connect to the router with no problems, giving a strong signal and high quality. Although it's connected to my router and shows up as a TCP/IP adapter, I can't get win 98SE to connect to the internet via the acess point.

I have tried the D-Link and Netgear sites and can't find anything to help me out. I have tried google and returned no useful results.

The only (possibly?) strange thing I can find is that in winipcgf I don't get the D-Link Adapter listed.

Any ideas anyone? please go back to basics for me I have tried messing with static and dynamic IP addresses but sill no luck.

Make sure all the settings on the Access Point Match those on the card.

1) SSID (it is case sensitive)

2) Network Mode - needs to be set to Infrastructure mode

3) Encryption settings -- They need to be the same on both devices.

If all settings are the same. Try settings the card and Access Point back to factory default settings (e.g. SSID: default, Network Mode: Infrastructure and Encryption settings: Disabled). See if you can get a connection.

you might want to start afresh with the IP's if you've been having a play.

To release and renew IP addresses, go to Start > Run. Type in winipcfg and click OK. At the top, click on the drop down box and select your ethernet adapter . (DWL-120) Once selected, information about the adapter will show up including MAC address, IP address, subnet mask, and default gateway.

At the bottom, click Release. The IP address should read 0.0.0.0 or 169.254.x.x. Click Renew. You should now receive a new IP address. Click OK to close the window.

If you are not able to get an IP address try setting one statically:

From the desktop, right-click on the Network Neighborhood icon and select Properties. Highlight TCP/IP and click the Properties button. If you have more than 1 adapter, then there will be a TCP/IP Binding for each adapter. Highlight TCP/IP > (DWL-120) and then click Properties.

Click Specify an IP address. Enter in an IP address that is on the same subnet as the LAN IP address on your router. Example: If the routers LAN IP address is 192.168.0.1, make your IP address 192.168.0.X where X is between 2-99. Make sure that the number you choose is not in use on the network.

Click on the Gateway tab. Enter the LAN IP address of your router here (192.168.0.1). Click Add when finished.

Click on the DNS Configuration tab. Click Enable DNS. Type in a Host (can be any word). Under DNS server search order, enter the LAN IP address of your router (192.168.0.1). Click Add.

Click OK twice. When prompted to reboot your computer, click Yes. After you reboot, the computer will now have a static, private IP address.

Thanks, I've tried on default but no luck. And the connections settings match. The adapter seems to see the router as it connects and downloads the settings, but no internet.

When I run IPconfig in 98 I have two PPP adapter settings present but nothing for my d-link.

I will give the other ideas a go in a bit. Thanks.

ok, tried changing settings as above with server and fixed ip's but no improvement.

I have removed all un-needed protocols and re-installed the adapter.

In win ip config (98) I have the server listed, when I click for more info the ip and subnet are listed for the router under the host section. I still have only the standard (ppp) dial-up modem avaliable under the rest of ip config,

Looked at the provided link, everything matches apart form the bit about enabling access points. My netgear router is set as an access point, but I have no option under my d-link dapter.

D-Link suggests that I should have the adapter listed. Do I have to do something else to get it installed properly? I have tried the drivers from the cd and also downloaded from d-link, but neiter make it apper as it should. Strangely though in the network config it is listed as a TCP/IP adapter. Any more ideas?

PS I do have the problem listed on the d-link site of hanging on bootup, but i use the plug/unplug fix for that.

Bootup into safemode. Have a look at the drivers for adapters, there will be hidden ones. Uninstall them all and reboot. Re-install.

OK, may be a silly question but when you say that, do you mean boot into safe mode, go to networking and remove everything there, ie. tcp/ip, microsoft clients etc.?

In Device Manager, remove any reference to the DW-120 under Network

Adapters. Also remove any reference to an Ethernet PCI Controller under

Other Devices.

Remove any reference to the DW-120 in Network Configuration. (Control

Panel - Network) .

Reebot and reinstall.

Hi, about to try your last suggestion, but here's the elaboration:

When the D-Link adapter is plugged into the USB port and I boot up, I get most of the way through booting then just before entering windows it hangs, I have to reset to re-boot. If I boot with the cable unplugged fro the adapter, then plug in as soon as my background appears windos is ok and I can 'use' the device (ie. it finds my router).

When shutting down I have to unplug the adapter again otherwise windows hangs on shutdown too.

have you tried any of the following

Upgrade the BIOS on your computer.

Make sure you have the latest Windows updates

Verify you have the latest drivers for your USB Controller (usually solved by #1 and 2).

Connect the DWL-120+ directly to the back of the computer. Do not use the USB ports on a keyboard or the front of the computer, or connect to an USB hub.

If you have an Intel 82801 USB Controller, please visit and load the Intel INF update which has corrected this issue. Make sure you uninstall the DWL-120+ AND any other wireless utilities before running this update. When update is complete, then reinstall the DWL-120+.

Not tried the BIOS upgrade, not keen on doing that unles I have to.

I've got most of the Windows Updates a few months ago when I re-installed Windows, I'll give it another go though incase there's anything newish out.

Where can I check/get the latest drivers for my USB?

The device is alredy directly plugged into the back of th PC.

I have a previus version of the USB controller. (827xx I think)

ok, rang D-Link, the adapter should appear in under ethernet devices in ipcfg, but doesn't. D-Link's answer was that it's a problem with Windows and it needs re-installing.

I've had a look at the tcp/ip properties again and the adapter is only bound to Microsoft Client and MS Family Logon. Do I need to either get it to bind to Windows Logon or get into windows via the family logon somehow?

Hi, any more suggestions before I reformat?

I've run sfc and changed everything back to the original file, but no luck.

I've been having another think, other than the bindings which I'm still open to suggestions on I'm wondering if the PC think's it's a host, for the folliowing reasons;

In winipcfg i get only my dial-up moden in ethernet adapters, however when I click more info I see the PC (PC1) set up as Host node. If I tell it somehow (please advise) that it's not a host is it likely that the adapter will appear as an ethernet device instead?
