Worried. Installing XP2700 and mobo

Yeah, yeah, I'm a little old lady. Nevertheless, two questions for the experts.

I've installed the cpu and heatsink ( bit of a chair gripper, that heatsink clip :blink:) and I had expected the four rubber feet on the core to disappear to nothing. They dont, do they. I can still see them and I'm wondering if the heatsink has a good contact ?

I've put the mobo in its tray and, although I'm fairly sure that the area around the screw holes is insulated, I just wanted to check that insulating washers were not required. :)

Back to me knitting while I wait.

The feet don't normally disappear - not on the ones I've built anyway. Did you make sure that you used either heatsink compound OR the pad provided in the heatsink itself and if you used the pad that you removed the backing paper? N.B. You MUST NOT use both.

If the contact is not what it should be, the CPU will quickly heat up and shut itself down but obviously it's best that it doesn't need to do that.

It is normal that any motherboard tracks that are likely to come in contact with mounting screws are earth tracks so there shouldn't be a problem. On some (all?) boards there is a deliberate track to one of the mounting holes to ensure an earth contact and reduce electrical noise.

The boxed cpu that I got had the plastic 'lid' over the thermal contact- no tape to remove. It seems from the manual that you get one or the other. ( I think :blink: :D )

I guess the linking track must be on the underside. Too late to check that now but I did use all nine holes so if it's there, I've used it. Ta. :)

People of my vintage and disability don't normally go out to work.

I've worked from home since 1996. I'm arthritic and following two humdinger heart attacks (after several "silent" ones) in 1999, my mobility is severely limited.

Twist normally goes to the FD end. It is important as well to insert the plug right way round - the red tracer normally goes to pin one - that is the pin furthest away from the power connectors. Watch out at the M/B end as well. Pin one should be marked on the board. Nothing drastic happens if you get it wrong except the drive doesn't work and the light is always on.

Odd!!!!!

EIDE cables such as are used for HDD and optical drives are normally blue at the M/B end and black at the master drive end. If there is a mid-cable connector it is usually grey and is for the slave device..

Did this cable come with the M/B? If yes, it should tell you in the manual which way round this strange cable colour coding means.

Yes, it came with the mobo. The mid-way slave connector is black and the miniscule installation pic. shows a black end in the drive so I'll go with that and put the red end in the mobo.

The IDE channels on the mobo are coloured;

1= green

2=white

3 and 4 = green ( No red one :D )

As I'm not using an IDE hard drive I could put the (red) CD-RW connector into 1 or I could put it into 2 with a view to adding an IDE hard drive later. I'm actually installing 2 SATA hard drives and they've got their own channels. IDE 3 and 4 are for IDE RAID. Waddy think , in 1 or 2 ?

EDIT; I've moved the CD-RW jumpers to 'master'.

Forgot you were doing SATA - about which I know zilch.

I would think that as long as you have your BIOS set to recognise your optial drives wherever you put them, it would be OK.

My natural inclination though would be to still put my "C" drive at IDE 0 even though I have a SATA system. I'm probably wrong on this but I'm not sure how the M/B will behave with nothing in IDE 0 or if it finds an optical drive there.

My SATA drives have dedicated SATA connections on the mobo. The only IDE device I have is the CD-RW and I've got the four IDE channels , 1 to 4 ( no 0)

You think I should put the CD-RW in 1 ?

My two SATA drives will be 'mirrored' so they should be read as one drive and designated 'C' automatically. I hope. :blink:

This will show pin 1 on the motherboard ide connector. IDE 1 is the same as IDE 0. You have IDE 1 + 2, normal ATA and IDE 3 + 4 which is raid ATA.

The IDE cable will have a connector in the middle, the end with the longest section of cable between the middle will go to the motherboard. Unless as pops says it is colour coded.

Check. Everything is installed. I've just got to make all the power connections. I put the CD-RW in 1 ( 0 )

Does it matter which power connectors I use, the ends or the branches ?

EDIT; No jollies this week, too much work. Today's my day off and I've spent all of it assembling. Luckily for me -pops- was at home. :)
