Core samples, Grim. Each 'season' lays a frozen layer which can be read . It's possible to extrapolate past temperatures from layer thicknesses and also atmospheric chemical content. Core samples are capable of telling us which of the earth's volcanoes were active and when. They will also yield up a lot of other information in time. Drilling for oil there is fart of an idea.
