doug Posted November 30, 2003 Report Share Posted November 30, 2003 My chum in Salisbury - Somewhere down South - Was up for a few days playing with my system. Having previously said he wasn't interested in updating hes PC as he only used it for Freecell, he rang a couple of days ago to say he had been in the local Library a couple of times and had some sessions there. His present set up is on the third floor of their house and has been put off because apparently he would have to have cables running from the incoming point for the NTL cable either up the outside or inside of the house. His question is - is it possible to get some sort of box fitted to the cable point and get a laptop so he can make a wireless connection? Any suggestions? Guest spikeychris Posted December 3, 2003 Report Share Posted December 3, 2003 Hello Doug.Does your mate have an NTL digi box? if so NTL provide the cable modem which you can plug into any Broadband router with an ethernet WAN port.If he wants to connect his laptop to the internet wirelessly, without the need to have the main pc switched on all the time he will need a router and a wireless PCMCIA card, (the card plugs into the side of the laptop)The NTL box will plug into the WAN port of the WIFI router, then the desktop will plug into the router through his network card. The wireless router can connect to his laptop through the wireless card.Check that the router will allow him to change the mac address (NTL are a bit vicious on this one) of the wan side.
