Age of Empires 2 and XP pro

Any suggestions. My Age of Kings previously worked when I was running 98 SE. I've just tried running it (and removing / re-installing after disk clean up and defrag) under XP Pro. It goes through the opening videos but then hangs with a black screen when about to launch the opening page. I've tried looking for help but with limited success. Suggestions as to where to go. The 2a patch has no effect.

Try Right clicking on the shortcut , down to properties then click the compatability tab , and and tick the box "run this programme in compatability mode for: and pick windows 98/me from the list...see if that helps

Guest Grim Reaper

doug,

here is a list of sites dedicated to AoE2, most of them have forums, i am sure that one of them would have a problem that is similar to yours....

As an ex AoE and Age of Mythology fan i sympathise with you not being able to get your daily fix!!!

Good luck...

Thanks GR. Followed up that link and was able to pin down the problem. It's Zone Alarm. If I disable it the AoE2 runs OK. Leaving it enabled and the game hangs partway through the start. I have ticked AoE in the enable boxes but the problem is still there. So any suggestions?
