I downloaded Desert Combat last night... and my oh my.. it certainly is all that Spook says.. and then some more... I've yet to master flying the helicopters (if you think I was bad in the planes, you haven't seen anything yet..... hilarity isn't the word)

Okay, really now... how on earth do you fly the d*mded helicopter? I keep being lured in by its seductive image, then I use my patented 'try-and-figure-things-out-when-it's-too-late' technology, and it doesn't work! I've so far ended flying upside down, crashing within seconds, or flying too d*mn high to see anything, it's just not on....

I do like the new vehicles, and the weapons, it just makes me realise that EA ripped me off even more than I originally thought with Road to Rome... this cost nothing, and is bound to take up much more of my playing time.... if only because I need to learn how to fly that d*mned helicopter... oh.. and be more accurate with the planes...

Thanks for mentioning the patch Spook, I'd completely missed it and was fearing I'd be doomed to play it as a single player game :o

Take care Spook, and may the force be with you...

or something equally as profound...

Thanks Ordep - I'm still about (just) but I havent had much to say - IP would say that makes a change :)

Installed BF1942 on saturday and left the PC to download the 1.31 patch for the rest of the afterrnoon.

Finally played a couple of instant battles yesterday.

First impressions are its somewhat confusing to suss out the actual point/style of gameplay - the manual (for once I read it) although reasonably complete on key commands doesnt spend much time talking about the gameplay.

Having said that after a couple of battles the gameplay becomes more obvious and I am impressed with the openess of the game and the engine - the idea of being able to use any weapon or vehicle is pretty incredible and jumping in a jeep to race to a map point then getting in a tank to roll on and attack an enemy emplacement is pretty cool.

This is a different game to what I am used to - and the large maps and multiple weapons platforms seem unbalaced by the lack of actual players/bots on the maps - being used to FPS type games with lots of in your face action, the wait while you roll a tank from an allied base to an axis base without seeing anyone, friend or foe seems slightly dissappointing. The actions of the bots at standard levels gives the impression of somewhat thick slightly mobile mannequins who seem to be able to shoot the nuts off a flea with a sniper rifle but cant hit a tiger tank at 4 paces with a bazooka.

Any thoughts on optimum bot intelligence/speeed levels?

So - a limited first impressions based on a couple of goes - looking forward to my first MP experience.

PS - is it just me or do certain commands refuse to work?

First game I tried Midawy - jumped in a landing craft, motored to the beach and sat there for ages trying to make the ramp go down. Couldnt do it. Finally quit the game and assigned a secondary key which worked intermittantly. Gave up on Midway and played El Alemein and Battle of the Bulge instead.

Just you...

If you're in the driving seat (press '1' to drive, '2' to man the gun, and the others to sit in the front part as an easy target) use the arrow keys to raise/lower the ramp, press E again and charge forward.. onto your impending doom at the hand of one of those pin point plane bombs....

It is a different style of game to the MOH pair, and although some of the maps seem vast you should play them with the Desert Combat mod - they all seem horribly too close then...

On a mod-free note - some of the maps are extensively huge, and require you travel a huge distance, before being sniped, meaning you have to travel an incredible distance - to flip your vehicle, repeat with variations on the theme until the fun stops... But there's plenty of maps that are a more moderate size and have just as many vehicles as your disposal....

Tried flying the planes yet?

Hi maby

S/P is pants but, good to practice on, its the M/P that comes into its own.

I don't get nearly enough time to practice so, as a result I'm bloody useless.

Spook and IP are well into it.

Glad its installed for ya first time.

Happy killing :)

OK - had a few more goes on MP now - its quite good fun really isnt it?

Quite fun to jump in a tank and rumble around, and so far the element of TK'ing, arsing around seems to be absent from the servers I have tried.

I think I prefer the smaller maps - though there are a lot of them arent there?

Also it helps if you have at least oone or two on the team who are interested in team lay - so many times ou see people hanging around waiting for a tank to appear totally ignoring the fact that they could be manning an AA gun or something in the meantime.....

Chat finctioanlity seems limited, whish is a shame as I am used to losts of chat in Spearhead - it would also make team/tactics much easier to address - the pre-programmed chats on the function arent all that useful I find as the mini map doesnt show the last spoken command/request....

I'll carry on playing for now....

When you use the radio commands your respective little arrow on the map flashes up - giving indication to the other players to just where the submarines are on Tobruk <_<

Other than the radio commands, the entire 'Say all' and 'Say team' functions seem best used for idle banter, unless you can type quickly and accurately that there's a mass army heading straight for the spawn point... and you want your mum. Normally you get half-way through such a message and then die - it's not the best way to fight a battle...

'Battlefield 1942' - New Multiplayer Map Available NOW

Posted on Friday, March 21 @ 10:17:56 PST

EA and DICE have released a new free map for Battlefield 1942. This totally unexpected announcement allows owners of Battlefield 1942 to download the new desert based map, Operation Aberdeen. Operation Aberdeen is the latest free map from DICE. It is an all armor battle set in the desert. There are 5 points to capture, and players will need to secure both outposts, and the area around the central town to ensure victory (thanks VE3D).

Another quickie - anyone getting "corrupt data" errorwhen entering multiplayer maps?

Select a game, enter, map starts loading then gets the error about half way thru.....infrequent occurrence.....

Version - cant remember - no mods but it only seems to have happened since I d/l the Aberdeen map.

Ho hum - looks like a re-install is on the cards.

BTW - the Aberdeen map is ok, but nothing special - a big empty desert for tank warfare - no planes at all.

IMHO of a couple of goes, it looks a bit biased to the axis, but that could just be me being rubbish :)
