Prince of Calcutta

You would really need someone who has tried the game out with a GF2 card. Is that an MX one or the super fast ones of the time?

Could have saved me quite a bit of time posting your specs firstly, Rav'/. Next time and that would be better thanks.

ahh but it is the MX version ...  its still pretty new .. came with the pc which is why i was waiting a bit before upgrading... cpu is p4 1.8 with 512 ddr and 2 7200 rpm hdds coming to 100 gb..

guess i'll give it a try after all  used to running games in low resolutions

LOL. You needn't have worried. Yes. The MX card might need some investigative work - like I said, best to just hire it from GAME and if you can't tweak it the way you need to, then ok, take the game back.

You can get a new card easily enough - my suggestion for budget bur performance conscious is 4200 (64mb or 128mb according to Tom's VGA charts no difference in direct 3d apps). Else, if you've got shedloads of dosh bu tdon;t want to spend really silly money, go for the ATI Radeon Pro 9700 - there's plenty of good new ATI cards actually - but only the price for some of the 9700pros has recently dropped in anticipation of 9800, 9600 etc shortly due for release - Crucial (UK) do it for £232 I think and available elsehwere in different flavours (Maya etc) for similar.

Still - I think you'll be okay - and if u have ADSL - whoosh! No worries. Join us if you want.

Ordep - some of that guff I said, with regards to backing up folders etc (before installing new patches/mods) I am not too sure about really, though it makes some sense if you wish to switch between separately modded versions, in the incidence that certain mods clashed with others if that was a prob as it actually is with some combinations of those available, I believe. I think a syetem resore is really best way to do it now (before installing any new add-ons, patches or whatnot - I remember some of those maps (very surprisngly) had nasty effects on the game which prevented said title in total to not load up. You need to use some caution:

Mods/Maps worth getting

1) Desert Combat version 0.25 (patch it)

- The R2R patch does allow use of weapons though there appear not to be any vehicels at all

- There will be a new later version release, as it's still an alpha mod (IP provided the info that yo may wll be paying for that one)

- There's the Apache wars further mod (not same devlopers) for the Tobruk (original) map - sounds good

2) GI Joe (patch it)

- Loads of new vehicels and couple of new maps

- Nice sound effects and fast vehicles but waaay too fast to control

- But free to largest extent

- No one's playig it really - yet (it's new and will take time to gain popularity)

- Very large file size - get it from Filefront not the exclusivist GamePlanet

3) CIS or Conflict in Somalia mod

- Requires much work yet unlike the above 2 (there are only a few maps whereby vehicles have been added to/textures etc

- Very new... Small file size and in alpha stage like both the above - it's much rougher looking, though it runs ok

4) Merciless Blood Patch/Texture sets

- This is well worth getting and I rate it very highly. It transforms the original game but remains the original in essence

- There are some fantastic imporvements to textures, soldiers etc as well as flag changes, new authentic flags and blood of course

- It requires (unlike the above) that it be patched into the game before any other mods and in all cases, you should have the latest EA

patch which at the time of speaking is still 1.31

- There is a new texture set out for it. (Basically they can update new textures to soldiers, buildings, maps and vehicles and so on

- There are no new vehicels though but there textures have been improved with maps of the hood of the jeep etc

- The loading screens are very nice and informative unlike the original and an attempt is made again at authenticity

These won't be spelt right but a quick rough guide to the maps worth getting

1) Batttle for Guam - nice suspension bridge thing (interesting to see how it would play online - due to interesting strategic map lay out)

2) Official EA Aberdeen Map

3) Coral Sea Map - this is *beep*e as far as it goes unmodded where it is a single player only

- there's a mod for it to make it capture the flag rather than divebomb the aircraft carrier in smacktard fashion

- it's included (as EA's unbelievably pedantic free Xmas gift), firstly as a wait for it map, then in a patch (1.31 has it so no needs to

download the bugger)

- also available are single player mods (tiny tiny download of 300odd K) and allows you to play against the more intelligent bots

- another mod for this crud map is Coral Evenings (guess what the difference is)

4) Wake Evenings

- Yes they're related. This I really like - I noticed how no battles were fought during the day in the original (save for the R2R map,

Monte Casino)

5) A Bridge Too Far

6) Dune Messiah

7) Snow El Alamein and texture sets for planes

8) Carentan

9) Propaganda

10) XhAOS Island (very nice like the GUAM map)

11) Assault (unplayed)

12) Fish River

13) Citadel Isle (forgotten if it's any good or not but it is I think)

14) Ring of Fire

There are also a wealth of editing tools, none of which I've tried or likely will due to my own smacktard status of being clumsy with that kind of thing.

Things that are ok-ish and won't bugger your system up also but not worth much of a look are:

1) Codename Eagle

2) Soldier9's Realism Mod (though it's interesting and would be good to see in practice)

Things untried as yet by myself but worth a look at later are:

1) Battlegroup42's TeamworkMod

2) Killer Commando Beta .2

3) Mod Collection RTR 1.3

4) Parallel World 0.4 Still not tried this but the original mod developer has now been pilched by guess who*, the Desert Combat

Team

In Anticipation of...

1) Galatic Conquest Star Wars mod

- looks extremely professional

- two new maps including Hoth and Tatooine (shame on you if you no not what that means)

- great new weapons just like DCmod introduced to its game verision

2) A better and more worthwhile CIS mod version

- as mentioned it's extremely shoddy as it is though runs bug free

- the helis on this mod (unlike the GI Joe one) are controllable (n00by flying wannabies like Commander Pig and Capt. Ordep would

maybe find them easier to control* (as I intially found) in comparison to the DC mod helis (still they present there own unique probs

but flight controls are much more in the vein of the orginal game's plane flight logic)

3 The Space Mod

- even farther back in development than the Galactic Battles one

There are some funny little movies for this game too

1) The Battlefield Cops

- this is a spoof police chase/antics movie file (as the name suggests)

- it's in a poor video standard I think if I remember right so pic quality is not as good as it could have been though its running time is

lenghty enough to make it worth watching

- I've watched it a number of times, it has a great little soundtrack and is actually very humorous in places - the in Jeep soldier head

bobbing at the beginning has to be seen to be appreciated for how damn sidesplittingly funny it is

2) Self-aggrandisement

- There's plenty more movie files, though some are just links to streaming media (maybe better for some) and are really cheesey and

self indulging - ie, do you really want to see a very 'close up' of a spotty American kid telling you what he thinks he knows about

EA and there reasons behind releasing the game, as though he were responisble himself for co-ordinating the whole thing and

the release of BF1942 was down to him?

- As mentioned there are many like this so you know what to do if on downloading them, they open a link and some oik appears with

smarmy fixed grin and bright shiney (expensive looking) teeth and too much hair gel

Miscellaneous

1) Console Commands

- worth getting used to

2) Historical and other types of gaming guides

- inc hints, tips etc and other performance enhancing tips

3) Read the FAQQING FAQ

4) Use the Technical Help resources available

- both EA Games and unofficial web guides are available for performance and other stability related game running problems

5) Forums are available if you want to be at the leading edge of current news

Worth looking at too...

1) BF1942 - The Way of the Spook Tooth

2) BF1942 - The unOfficial and best

- this site is what I've just be using to refresh my memory typing this out for people

- it has links to everything really so no need to go elsewhere (normally)

Stuff I forgot to mention

1) EOD or Eve of Destruction (Indo-China) mod

- very impressed with this so far

2) Wastelands

- always hearing good things about it

3) Smacktard Poster site - at Static 3D

- especially for Mundy who linked it the first time and still everybit as funny and more relevant than even the last time

- when you've been learning the of the 'Way of the Smacktard', these posters aren't just funny, not just true, they have therapeutical

value to them

- you can use 'active desktop' to have a moveable poster of your choice
