One of the most important new features in Office XP, says Microsoft, is improved facilities for managing documents and retrieving information from corrupted files. But just how good is it?

Here is a pdf file for you to download and read at your leisure!!

I know from experience just how good it is.

I had an Excel file at work containing months worth of data that became corrupted (due, I believe, to a crappy integration of Office with Lotus Teamrooms - don't ask, it wasn't my idea!). All recent backups were also corrupted. The file was so badly corrupted that attempting to open it crashed Excel, then Windows crashed in quick succession. Our IT department's answer to this was to format my PC and re-install everything.

I took a copy of the Excel file home and managed to open it in Excel 2002. I was then able to export the macros, then export all of the data, sheet by sheet to new workbooks. I then rebuilt the file and it then opened with Excel 97 at work.
