Unreal2 Anyone playing this at the mo?

I know IP's been having a go.

I really rather like it. Movement is slower than in UT but that's fair enough cause you're wearing heavy duty armour and you can't do any of that rolling around stuff (though you can dodge).

Nice weapons, nice dialogue. Of course anything like this can be compared to Half Life but I really like the look and feel of this.

I had one crash when I started playing after enabling the EAX sound for my Audiology card but having disabled that I've not had a repeat crash yet.

Yeah Dan. Got it in the post today. Haven't tried it yet - been reading what others think about it online. Many reckon it's far too short a game, and completed it within the space of 5 - 8 hours of play. Lack of MP is bemoaned by many as is absence of any real innovation. They're looking forward to Doom 3's release (the fools).

Hi there.

There seems to be an attitude that motivates players to play a game to complete it as quickly as possible. But to me playing this is kind of like being in a film, and the thing to do is play it a bit at a time, enjoying the immersion. And too if you're smart you can have a go with the editor (not me).

Yes Dan. They said it was rich in immersive cinematics.

Haven't loaded it up yet. Like you, I doubt I'll be looking at the U2 level editor thing.

You seen the UT2003 thread? Thought maybe you'd find it useful so started it to pool our collective knowledge of the game. Must say there is so much stuff now, I've left it as it is. Guess you never received me email, but was just informing you it was there. ;)

I like it, although I'm not that far on - Only on Hell (which, ironically, looks frozen over  )

And people moaned about the lack of multiplayer of GTA 3 too, personally I think there's nothing wrong with the occasional single player only game.

In an annoucement on the Infogrames forum Designer/Producer Glen Dahlgren had this to say:

Hi everyone,

I wanted to give you all a quick update about what's happening on the home front. While we Legend guys haven't been posting here as much as we'd like (things are still pretty crazy here), I assure you we have been reading your comments and concerns, and we take them all very seriously.

As you may have read in the forum already, we're planning on releasing a patch sometime soon. It should address a number of the issues that people have raised in these forums. As well, we're going to be releasing a demo, especially targeted at those of you who want to 'try before you buy'. It should be a great benchmark to see how the game runs on your particular system.

In a later post, I'll try to get you some specifics about both of these, but it shouldn't be too long until you've actually got them in your hands.

Thanks to everyone for your support.

A game's just not a game without a patch....

Nuts.

The patch didn't do it for me.

But the problem is still EAX sound related cause the game only crashes for me when I have EAX enabled.

I wonder what the patch actually did? Aside from fail to work I mean.

As an incidental it would be nice if you could import the weapons from Un2 into UT2003 - they are after all the same engine aren't they?

Hmmm..............best described as a very average shooter i think

I can well understand gamers getting through this game in a matter of a few hours,

Shoot the monster, go through the door, reload, shoot the monster, go through the door, shoot the monster, reload, go thought the door.......

The reload times are excruciatingly long.

No environmental interaction in the game, unless you include using (Enter) to open doors ever two minutes

Far to linear, as with most shooters

Well over priced, £19.99 would be more like it.

The levels are very short, therefore you don't stand a chance of "getting into the game". You no sooner finish one level then your off to the next.

As you may have gathered by now, I'm not very amour'ed with this,

In the words of the younger gamers,

This game sucks.

If its a bit of action you want, go and mow the lawn, don't wast your time on this

Dan, would be interested to here your analogy between Half Life and Unreal

Haven't got to far into the game yet Mundy, to be honest it takes some effort to play it.

I've got it out from Game, so i'll perceiver with it for a few days yet

I'll post back if i have a change of view,

Here we go again....

Open door shot monsters, reload, open door shoot monsters, reload, open door....

Ordep - why it made me think of Half Life was the interaction between npc and your own character.

Having got a bit further in I admit it's a little disappointing. Graphically the outside areas are very nice, but inside on the later levels I feel that the Alienesque walls look too flat and not bioengineered enough.

This said the weapons are lovely. The sniper rifle is just what UT2003 is lacking. The rocket launcher is a joy as are all the other tech weapons, though I'm not so keen on the bio mod weapons.

I feel that it could have been so much better (which let's face it is a critique which can be laid on so many games these days). Graphically it's very pretty and there is a kind of film like feel to it. Unfortunately it's a straight to video rather than a blockbuster. Still - I'm gonna finish it and be plugging away at it for sometime (cause I've been looking forward to it for so long, and there's little else out there in game land that has my attention at the moment.)

Hi Dan.

Could not for the life of me see the connection between Half life and Unreal but, now i see were your coming from.

Feel sorry for all the disappointed fans of Unreal, i think you've been waiting 5 years? for this installment.

It must be a hugh responsibility on developers to better there previous efforts, thinking of Simms, gta, for example. Quake 3 is being dropped from the world cyber games in favor of Warcraft 3 could spell the begin of the end for it.

Waiting myself, with bated breath, for the next installment of Tomb Raider, i think thats being hurriedly revamped due to unfavorable reviews at a game show.

As you say, if your a harden fan , you get it come what may.

And your right, theres bugger else around at the mo any way.

Any way, enjoy your game mate

I still quite like this, sorry to be awkward, but I do, note 'quite like' and not 'love, adore and worship'.

It is by no means a groundbreaking marvel, and definatley feels to be firmly routed 'on-the-tracks' with little or no room for taking alternative routes, and I know you're wearing an armoured suit and that progress is bound to be slow but couldn't they have upped the walk speed a little?

Also, I seem to spend half my time looking at a rather bland and unappealing load screen, as I wait for the level to load, the inter-level briefing to load, and extra part of the level to load... and it does take it's time loading too.

Niggles aside though, it's still fun shooting things (for simple folk like me), just a shame that they took so long to release a game that, although graphically pretty, fails to break any gaming barriers. There is, however, a mod that is being developed here, to allow co-op play of Unreal 2 - which would be nice - sadly, by the time that it comes out we'll probably have forgotten all about U2 an moved onto newer titles...

And I can't mow the lawn.. it's all squishy, and wet - can I get the same amount of action from washing the car?

I do luuuurve the intro credits scene, the kids toy of a (can't remember the name of the toy!) as you appear to shoot down this weird alien tunnel, and the excellent tune that goes with it.

No I really love it! :D

Kalidascope was what I was after (spelt wrong I think though).

Yeah sure it's been used lots (most memorable in Kubrick's 2001) but it's a very biological intro and the music is nice and catchy. Actually I'd be happy to use it for a relaxing screen saver if only it was on a loop up to where the written words kick in.

Spook, it's not what it should have been so don't go in expecting something Wowish. It IS fun, but not in a really special way.

Finished!

Do I win a prize now?

I don't think the game has much in the way of replay value though, I can't see myself going through the motions once again... even though setting people/spiders/alien things on fire is fun...

Well.. lets see...

I got it on the 13th had a quick play around before being forced to abandon my PC for Valentines weekend (for shame.....) started playing it again Monday evening, erm... couple of hours a night.. until today... which would suggest it took me roughly...

(uses fingers in a vain attempt to add up)

Around (but slightly less than) the 20 hour mark, i think....

Ooo - err.... and there's other people reporting finishing it in 10 hours .... and some in 5 hours... crikey... even with all those elongated loading periods...
