I have been using '98 for yonks......and have stayed with it mainly because I know how to fix it when it goes wrong.

What is so good about XP? What benefits can I get from XP that I don't get from '98?

Security I'm not bothered about because I have a good firewall and get onto the net through a router which has it's own firewall too.

Ease of use?.......I find '98 fine........now!!!

been thinking about treating myself but don't really want to splash out the dosh if all I am going to get is a memory hungry, pretty looking OS.

I see no problems with your specs,I'm running 2 machines on xp at the minute(dont ask why) 1 with celeron 700,512 ram,the other with a athlon 1800xp,768 ram, there is a big difference in the computers but the lower spec one copes well with xp,the differences I noticed from me and 98 is xp is super stable hardly any errors, great memory mangement,so user friendly, plus dont forget m/soft is basically finished with 98,best one to ask is madboy who has just upgraded from 98 to xp.

Thanks Eejit and Ellas........another question re: XP

Software and hardware.........my printer and scanner etc are pre-XP so is the majority of my software. I know there was a bit of a problem when it first came out but in your experience are most companies posting drivers and updates for XP now?

PS....Madboy, I would be interested in your views if you read this.

Oh dear........ I feel the urge to fiddle with my PC. Don't really need to upgrade but am coming around to the idea of XP.

Trouble is......once I start messing with it.......then the problems start.

Love it, love it, love it.

Hi Nellie :D

I have been using XP for about six months. I've had no problems and think it's super. I've used all the MS Op systems (except ME) and this is the best yet. Here's a link to browse when you get time http://www.microsoft.com/uk/windowsxp/

And here's a Windows XP driver's site http://www.windowsxp-drivers.com/

There was a question about a student copy of Win XP on the PCA site. I didn't think they did one but if I remember correctly Djohn bought an upgrade copy of XP Professional for about £50 from a company called Insight. Djohn will confirm (or not) if this is correct.

Members more experienced and knowledgeable than me will advise you properly but I just thought I'd put my two pennyworth in.

Hi

I would go for the upgrade to XP, i love it, it has not crashed in the year i have had it :)

As for drivers and software not working with it, the only thing i had a problem with was my Umax Astra Scanner but that was not xp at fault cos i could never get it working with w2k before that.

As a general rule if there are no XP drivers for your hardware the win 2000 ones will normally do it.

All the best

Tony
