Michelle
I don't know very much about ports just that they're software gateways, but how do I turn some off that aren't needed. Or does a firewall do all that for us?
Redhat
Hey,Personal Firewalls will block all ports by default. Then when an application needs to open the port the firewall will alert you, and say whether you want to let the information in or out of your computer. If your running a Personal firewall, you should be good B)

Agent Smith
Just for future reference, it is also possible to apply rules to your IP ports using W2k's own IPSec (Internet Protocol Security) software. Although to be honest, unless you have a great understanding of Networking and its Protocols, I doubt very much wether you will be able to get IPSec to be anywhere near as effective as an off the shelf firewall, and it is entirely possible you will actually stop your internet connection from even working. The IPSec snap in can be added by running the MMC (Microsoft Management Console), and for anybody who is interested, here is a quick M$ guide to the policiesM$ Kb 813878Mr. M.
