Bad Sector in Hard disk.

Recommended Posts

Hi there !

My best frnd 486 machine hard disk has some bad sectors ( 26188 kb). I keen to know is there some way to remove the bad sectors ?

We are kids of microsoft world.. and few days back started learning ASP and SQl Server. Though, her machine running absolutely fine but the major issue is we not able to convert file system. Her machine File system is Fat32. So, our webcontent will be store on the same file system. As far as my knowledge is concern, anyone will be able to browse our web contents because of FAT32 file system.

When I attempt to convert the file system to the NTFS file system by using the convert c: /fs:ntfs command, the conversion not succeed even though the hard disk has several GB of free space. I came to know from one knowledgebase article of Microsoft that failure of conversion is because of Bad Sectors in Hard disk.

Can any helping soul put some light on the issue ? What can i do apart from new hardisk ?

With thanks !

Hello Nellie,

See.. I fulfilled my promise which i made to you.. :D . Thanks !

That machine has Windows 2000 Operating System. I did all the basics Nellie, like ran Scandisk command , chkdsk /r ; chkdsk /p from system console but result was fruitless.

I really not want that lost data. All i want is to change file system form FAT 32 to NTFS anyhow or if someone has some-else idea thru which no one can browse our webcontent then please share...

With Thanks !

Don't know if this will help you, but I have a feeling that NTFS may be just a little too modern for 486 to handle!! If you did manage to get it converted, I think you will have quite a few problems!

BTW :welcome:

I don't think I know enough about this to be useful Newkid.... if you aren't bothered about the data have you tried formatting the disk and then converting it to the NTFS file system??

You might want to wait for someone else to come up with an idea though!!!

you could try the free trial of software here http://www.ariolic.com/activesmart/ or as nel says see if it will format.

:P

NewKid, in the link that ellas has posted, if you look to the left, you will see Documentation, click on it, and it will explain about low level formating, and gives links to most Manufacturers!

I am just concerned that the 486 mobo is a fair bit different to Pentium!!

But you should be OK with the low level Format!!

Once we did Nel...(allmost a week back) you surprised to know after 98% of formatting(probably in 15 minutes) system took more then 7 hrs to format the remaining 2 %. After 98% , it started to recover bit by bit allocation. When done, She installed first Win98 and then upgrade to Win2k pro. During Upgradtion, she opted the options to convert the FAT32 to NTFS but windows refused to do so.. :( Honestly, it's realy painful to first install the OS then download service packs / patches for Server, application s/w like visual interdav.....

Thanks Ellas ! for the URL. I went there and did what Drovers suggested..Scan my machine online with Seagate(HD Manufacturer) at the end it prompted me this message...

Results for volume C: (FAT32)

Volume Label: Bestfrnd

Volume Size: 6.51 GB

Some files on the volume are open. This may effect the accuracy of the file system check and result in false errors. The file system contains errors that need to be repaired.

I don't know what more one should closed. I opened only one window instances during scanning, closed down all the like NAV autoprotect, messenger, Server(SQL/IIS) and what not..

Now going to install the desktop version of that seagate utilities and lets hope for the best...

With Thanks!

NewKid, It is not a good idea to install a newer Version of Windows over an old one..

In regard to Win 98 and 98SE, both do not recognise NTFS, they are Fat32 Systems, the same as DOS does not regognise NTFS.

I think that this your Basic Problem! Because you have installed Win 2000 over the top of Win 98, the residule parts of the old Win98 System are causing a conflict!!

When you do the low level Format it should do it in DOS, if not make it do so!!

Easiest way to do that, is use the Win98 Start up Disk to boot you into DOS then type in Format C: Notice the space after Format?

When it is Formated, run the Low Level Format, then, I strongly suggest that you install Win2000 cleanly, just have your Win98 disk there and insert it when you are asked for it!! It just wants to know you do have the Old System!! Once it reads the old Disk, it will prompt you to reinsert the Win2000 Disk!

If you are confused, just PM me if you want!!
