leotoff
I have suspected corruptions on my hard drive for a while and at restart always get Windows File Protection asking for my XP disk to reload missing dlls. I tried CHKDSK utility but I get error "cannot open volume for direct access". Have searched extensively on Microsoft website and KB 823439 tells me Microsoft is aware and working on this problem. Anyone know where else I can try or alternatively cure my problem. The last thing on my mind is a reinstall.
Guest ellas
yeah says there no know fix at the minute, all I could find was "You may have success if you schedule Chkdsk to run at startup and use the /X switch, which will force a dismount" a useful page for xp commands here http://www.fsref.com/pr/dosxp.htm
Agent Smith
I have to agree with ellas here. It is best to get chkdsk running at boot. However, I would be worried about what you mean by "suspected corruptions". If you think that your hard disc is starting to fail, then reinstalling probably will not help. I suggest that you make sure you have good backups (off of the computer) of all your data, if this is the case. It may be that you will need to replace the drive. If I'm off the mark here, then sorry for any scaremongering :D Mr. M.
