you can use the tool in the link to monitor it,you can do a basic check within xp,

Under the Control Panel -> Administrative Tools, open the Even Viewer. Select the "Security" category and display recent events.

In the Category column, review Logon/Logoff events to ensure that they correspond to the times you have logged on to your system. Those with the number 529 in the Event column were failed logons.

If you have the Internet Communication Firewall turned on and configured for logging (described above), you will also find the identification of the system that attempted to connect to your PC. Remote Desktop connections are identified with a "dst-port" (the 8th column of data) value of 3389.
