Guest northamuk Posted May 20, 2004 Report Share Posted May 20, 2004 Gordon Brown has told OPEC that he is not happy with oil costing $40+ a barrel, well that's nice when the government takes 78 pence in the pound for a LITRE of refined (petrol - gasoline for our American friends). Mind you, if OPEC reduce the price, it will enable him to raise the TAX to 80%. :P :P :P :P :angry:>Just as an afterthought - the Oil companies BP, Shell, et al, post ever increasing profits from their 22 pence in the pound after refining, distributing and retail margin- so how much is Gordon pumping into the Government coffers, or do we really care? <>Another afterthought, our American friends are pretty p*ssed off with Gas costing a little over $2.00 a gallon just imagine how p*ssed off they would be if they had to pay $6.00 a gallon?< Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Grasping Gordon is going to put up the "duty" (what a silly word for theft) on diesel by almost 2p in Sept. Why?I think it is the first move along the road to jacking up fuel tax so that it become proportionate to MPG. As it is the diesel using motorist pays less tax per mile than the petrol driven one. We can't have that can we!!! (Yes I drive a diesel. We were encouraged to do so by our the government some years ago, in the interest of saving fuel.) catgate Posted May 25, 2004 Report Share Posted May 25, 2004 northamukYes I will grant you that, but the beggars have been slipping that bit extra on to diesel over the last few years so that in some instances recently I have seen diesel dearer than petrol. Years ago (here I go again) diesel was virtually a distilation by-product of petrol/oil production and was only coppers per gallon. Then we have the problem of those things like my old BMW motorcycle that does not like unleaded, but thats yet another story .Earlier on today my neighbour and I were trying to decide which would be the better word to incorporate into the English languge either heamorrblair or blairrhoid!! With the RMT looking to cause widespread disruption in the coming weeks it is hardly going to help the cause.The journeys I do by car are mostly 50+ miles and would take 3x as long to do using public transport - and no doubt cost 3x as much. There is no benefit to me in using it.My guess is people will pay the 'pump price' for fuel simply because they have already bought the car - the same concept keeps HP's profits high. If the money generated by car users went back into the road network/public transport things would be fantastic. As it is the money is used to fund other activies so we are left with a failing transport network, roads that come to a standstill for hours on end and no other option.Guess if prices keep on going up it may help the Nova disapear from the streets - which can only be a good thing :D Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Sir Radfordin Posted May 27, 2004 Report Share Posted May 27, 2004 I've a couple of friends out in Lebanon at the moment an in an email sent earlier they said "...the army has said it will shoot people's tyres if they see a car or bus etc on the road...but there are loads of cars going past anyway..."
