Just heard on the news that Nvidia have pulled out of the forthcoming Xbox2!

Seeing as Nvidia were leading the way in onboard technology it makes me wonder who's gonna step into their shoes?

ATI have taken the lead in this field over the recent months. NVidia have had the edge for ages. The 9000 range and introduction to Direct X9 have given ATI a much deserved boost in the market as of late. Their new processors will be released soon as will the new nVidia FX cards...Interesting times ahead ! ;)

There is also news that ATI have entered into a development agreement with Nintendo...This and many other interesting ATI issues from HERE.

ATI Technologies, Inc., a world leader in the design and manufacture of innovative 3D graphics and digital media silicon solutions, announced today that it has entered into a technology development agreement with Nintendo Co., Ltd. Under the agreement, ATI and Nintendo are developing technologies for use in Nintendo products. No other details regarding the nature of this agreement are being made available at this time.

"ATI has had an excellent relationship with Nintendo for many years," said David Orton, President and Chief Operating Officer, ATI Technologies Inc. "We are pleased to enter into this major technology development agreement with Nintendo."

...So as nVidia drop X-Box2, ATI take the reigns with Nintendo...

Competition = Better cards for the consumers??? - Lets hope so ;)

Something I read, dunno if it's same thing you're hinting at Scarthy, but core of nvidia fx series of GPUs to be built into their all in onboard series of motherboard chipsets or something? It'll be paired down right enough, dunno if it'll be stonkingly fast or whatnot, but the latest range of nforce mobos will be something to look out for.

Gates - greedy? I wonder what gave you that idea? Tom's news item:

MS taking Xbox into arcades

Hoping to open another avenue for its video games and broaden its front in the war against Sony and Nintendo, Microsoft is expected to take its Xbox game console into arcades later this year.

The project, code-named Chihiro after the heroine of the Japanese anime film "Spirited Away," has been in the works for a couple of years. Microsoft and Sega announced in fall 2001 that they would jointly create arcade machines based on the Xbox technology. But the partners have been quiet since that time.

Now the project is closer to fruition. When Microsoft and graphics-chip maker Nvidia settled their price dispute on chips for the Xbox, the agreement included plans for the Santa Clara chip maker to provide Microsoft with chips for arcade machines.

A Microsoft games source said the appeal of the arcade is the opportunity to sell more games and the chance to extend the Xbox brand as the coolest gaming experience. While hundreds of console games are released each year, only several dozen arcade games are released. The arcade titles influence the kind of console games that fans buy.

The rest of the article is at the San Jose Mercury News.

Hmmm. Can't find link, so maybe I was only just dreaming about the motherboard business... maybe it was here, here, or even here. I dunno.
