snakedog Posted June 14, 2004 Report Share Posted June 14, 2004 I'm running Apache webserver on an ancient WINNT Server (an NEC Ready 9542, Pentium I w/ 64 mb ram). My problem is that it just shuts down every few days. I did a burnin on it before I set it up and thought it was ok, but this random shutdown is symptomatic of either a bad power supply or a bad motherboard usually. What I ca't figure is that the thing is not rebooting. It shuts down and stays shutdown. I've run all the security patches and updates for NT Server, and have got it buttoned down on that side as best I can. Time to get the multimeter out and start testing? Swap some parts? About the only swapping I could do is the power supply. If it's the motherboard, the thing's so old it's toast anyway. Any advice? Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Agent Smith Posted June 15, 2004 Report Share Posted June 15, 2004 Is it possible it is a thermal cutout issue? If you are overheating, then if it does not cool down fast enough, then this could prevent the restart. It could be overheating on the processor or the psu. I think your best bet would be to swap the psu (assuming you have a spare to hand) and see what happens, if still no good, then you could build a really cheap replacement to use instead.Mr. M. awake Posted June 15, 2004 Report Share Posted June 15, 2004 I did have something similar a while ago. I eventually narrowed it down to the processor (1200 Duron). Though, the shutdown problem got steadily worse to the point where it wouldn't startup at all.Can't remember 100% if it rebooted each time, but don't think so.
