We are always being recommended games to get so this is my attempt at warning you all on games not to get.

So don't bother with the space shooter game, 'Echelon'. Played it for 10 seconds and it's pants.

Civ 3, Infogrames/Firaxis really messed this up IMHO.

Civ 2 was one of the best games of all time, spent many "all nighters" trying to rule the world, absolutely ace game. I mistakenly thought that Civ 3 would be an improvement and rushed out to buy it when it came out... played it once and hated it.

Its now stuck on the shelf gathering dust... what a waste.

spook- Civilization 3 came out about year ago. Civilization 1 and 2 were consistently topping the polls as the greatest game ever in their day. Don't really know how Civ 3 is ranked although it will I'm sure have a huge following.

I've been busy recently, any free time I've had playing games has been mainly SOF2. It's tough, very tough in parts perhaps I should be playing it on an easier setting. However, I'm determined to finish it as it really is a great game. But, I keep getting MOH withdrawal symptoms and so keep having to have a blast of Spearhead as well.

I promised myself not to buy another game until I've finished SOF2 but Play.com are selling Max Payne for £10 (I can't resist a bargain) so I ordered it and it came this morning... I've promised myself not to install it until I've completed SOF2... I'm a sad git really.

The early rain levels were a bit depressing for somebody stuck in Manc also...
Well I'm a Manc (now living in Altrincham) so I'm used to the rain. I'm from the red half of the city, but don't let lived backwards know that... I'm still upset from last week!

Max Payne - yup, I'll certainly give that mod a go. Thanks for reminding me of Ghost's link.

The Civ games are turn based, so you have plenty of time to make your move during your turn, then the AI does the moves for the other players. You start the game in the year 4000 BC with a single settler and basically continues until you rule the world or manage to colonise another planet. At first, only part of the map is shown i.e. the area immediately surrounding your subjects. As you move around more of the map is revealed and you meet other civilisations. Using diplomacy you are able to trade/forge alliances/declare war/peace and swap knowledge. The last of which is the most important as it leads to power. If you have an edge and decline to share this with other civs then they can declare war and forcibly take it or they will send spies into your cities and try to steal it... the scenarios are many and varied which is it's great appeal. Anyway enough of my ramblings on Civ.

Most other strategy games are not turn based but are real time based, so you have to instantly respond to whats taking place on screen. The C & C series (Red Alert and Generals) is probably the best known of this type and many have followed in its path. I've not played this type of game since Red Alert which I loved, very tempted to return to this genre as it's a great gaming experience and a nice change from a FPS.

Can't comment on Medieval Total War as I've never played it (shame Lermontov ain't around as he did some postings on this in the old gamesroom).

Sim City - hmmm, this is completely different to the above games. I played the original version on the Nintendo (SNES). I found it boring... building cities, (no action besides the odd plane crash which tends to demolish a few city blocks) laying roads and setting taxes... no not my type of game. I'm sure Sim City has come a long way since then but I'm sure the basic concept will be the same. Most of the Sim games are I think a variation of a theme, what the heck, I'll be blunt... they are a girls game, I just stay well clear of them.

Only based on the huge demos that I downloaded for them but both Knightrider & Platoon aren't worth the time of day.

I've heard rumours of a patch for Platoon that help fixes some of the more annoying aspects of the game (such as your soldiers not returning fire, unless you directly instruct them too - not a handy feature in a RTS), but I doubt that a single patch could have fixed the reported problems I've read about, and those god-awful actors voices - waste of a perfectly good film license.

I didn't expect the Knightrider game to be all that enthralling, but never in my wildest dreams did I imagine that super car K.I.T.T. would handle so badly, and there's also the fact that you're playing as David Hasselhoff - never a good thing... Had a nice intro though... PC Advisor gave it 7/10, which, in my humble opinion, is probably based on some kind of nostalgic kick... but what do I know? I only played the demo... (but if you look on Game Rankings.com it seems my hunch may be right)

Anything else? Hmmm... The original Vietcong demo (released sometime ago now though, and the game hasn't been released yet - so it may have improved) was poor, didn't like the way the game flowed at all, although it had a novel game mode, and some of the best water effects I've seen...

IGI 2 - nothing particularly impressive about this game, a nice pair of thermal goggles and nothing that you haven't seen in a FPS before...

The Sims, Sim City, Sim Farm, Sim Zoo, Sim Sim, etc - Games of this ilk bore me relentlessly, I need more action in my games, and am not keen on a 'life management simulator' when it's hard enough managing mine, thank you very much Maxis....

I'm not too keen on over-complex flight sims either, the ones which come with manuals twice the size of an uncut edition of War & Peace... Way to technical and involving for one as simple as me..

And most probably, in retrospect, I wouldn’t recommend anyone splashing out for Unreal 2; it’s nothing special – and certainly not the ground-breaking (or at least path deviating) game I was hoping for…

That's all I can think of for now....

Backwards liveD - :D No complaints, I've calmed down now (just). Blimey, even the Blue's were jumping on the bandwagon and gloating... mind, the poor sods haven't got much else to cheer about.

It's awful when a flippin' game can have such an emotional impact on a grown man (my wife say's I'm still a kid  ). Mind, just think in ten days time the roles will be reversed.

I see that another resident of surrey has reared their head in the form of he he :-)™!!!!!!!!!!

totally agree that a bit of leather being kicked around a patch of grass can reduce us to tears, be they of joy or laughter....

I would be really stupid to predict the result of the upcoming game as i said that we would whoop the celtic and that didn't quite go to plan.

Should be a good game though.
