I make a disclosure that my surname is Chapman. This is a derivative of cheepman or pedlar or tinker. From research I conducted many years ago the word *beep* is a permitted alternative to the word dam or Tinkers Dam. This was the partly fused earthen wall left from the fire used by travelling tinkers where they melted tin used to repair pots and pans. Because it was of no further use, they merely kicked it to one side before travelling on to their next port of call. Hence the term "Not worth a Dam" implying Tinkers Dam. :angry: Any further results into family history and current language.
