AlanHo Posted July 10, 2004 Report Share Posted July 10, 2004 Like a number of people on this Forum I use Mailwasher (Pro) as my first line of defence which has always worked well.In the last couple of weeks I have found more and more spam getting past Mailwasher for reasons I cannot ascertain. Fortunately I have an anti spam programme called Inboxer installed in Outlook which catches the stragglers - plus the junk filter in Outlook 2003 - so I am well protected.I am however curious how the odd items of spam are reaching my Outlook programme - I invariably "Check Mail" in Mailwasher and delete the crap immediately before loading Outlook - but from time to time spam gets through which is definitely not in the Mailwasher friends list.Any ideas anyone ?. djohn Posted July 11, 2004 Report Share Posted July 11, 2004 When I was with AOL I received anything up to 30 each day even though they are supposed to have the best filter possible. Even three usernames that I had never got round to using would get up to to 10 per day!Now with Zen for 9 months and not one single spam even though I use my own name for my e-mail address. I think it's because when you sign up with Zen they send your username/password by email or phone and it's a combination of upper/lower case letters, numbers, quite a few of them as well. You then phone them back after logging on and ask for an alias. This then is the name you use, in my case my own name. As an example my original address [given by Zen] could be: VfH6U7DekS46Cn8. But I would use joe-smith@ xxx in all my correspondence. They allocated a user name - a combination of numbers and letters - and I use my real name in one of the alias boxes. In my case this has not stopped the spam. I also do as powereless says in his thread, only give out my address to trusted people and a couple of forums.
