Sir T Fireball Posted July 13, 2004 Report Share Posted July 13, 2004 Hi,I have BB running through AOL 7 and have just removed the voyager modem and AOL software in the hopes of connecting through a Belkin ADSL wireless modem/router (802.11g). I have hard wired the router to my pc and configured the setup through the Belkin page accessed by typing in the IP address provided (192.168.2.1). It is my intention to network with my laptop once I have internet access sorted on this main desktop pc. The Belkin setup page now shows my pc as connected.I saved the settings and opened a new IE browser page, Google is my homepage and opens instantly. When I type a word in the search bar I get a list of sites as expected. It even produces a page of pictures when I choose the 'image' option. However, if I click on a link from those listed by google, the search for that particular site starts, but eventually times out.Summary: open IE browser and type router ip to access setup page and can see that I am connected. Run/cmd/ping ip address and all returns are ok.Cannot access any websites through IE browser page. :ph34r: Advice very welcome and desperately needed. Also IE sucks, try Firefox. :D Also make sure your security levels are set to default in your Internet Options control panel, unless you set them up customly for a reason, in which case, you know what the settings need to be.If not, upgrade Internet Explorer? You can check this by pinging, for example, someone like www.bbc.co.uk (as opposed to your routers address, which will only confirm a connection to the router, not beyond). This should at least prove that your connection is up and running.I suspect that your problem could be in the fact that you have removed the AOL software, which has possibly left some settings behind which now need to be corrected. However, as I have always refused to allow AOL anywhere near any of my machines, I cannot tell you what you may need to look for here. Perhaps some friendly ex-AOL user may be able to help. I suppose you could always try to reinstall the AOL software, or as Scarecrow Man suggested, try to obtain an install for a new browser such as Firefox and see if that helps.Mr. M. Mr. Invincible Mouse is very right in AOL software, even when removed causes problems. You may want to somehow, totally remove any trace of AOL, and, if you must, re-install it.Personally, I hate AOL. I don't even like the CD's they send you in the mail. djohn Posted July 14, 2004 Report Share Posted July 14, 2004 Its a shame Sir T. that people always try to make one feel somehow inadequate when you tell them you use AOL. :rolleyes: There is nothing wrong with AOL, excellent ISP when set up correctly and if you do decide to remove it from your system for some reason then it is no more difficult than removing other applications and far easier than some. Try removing Zonealarm for instance.I was with AOL for three years during which I did a lot of BETA testing of their software. Version 7 through to 9 also several of there add on applications. At times I would have up to to 6 or 7 separate versions of AOL on my PC and could use any one of them to connect without any problems.AOL uses IE6 to interface with the internet and it is often a problem with Microsoft's explorer that cause AOL to freeze , not he other way round.I've done a copy/paste of a post from "The Sack" that may be of some use to you. He has been with AOL for many years and networking them for at least four years that I know of.=================================================You do not have to use the AOL software with a router and you can use any router you like, why? Because the router logs you on to AOL as soon as it is powered up regardless of the state of the PC. As the router is logged on to AOL the software is rendered useless unless you actually want to use it. As shocking as it first appears to be just click on Internet Explorer and there is the internet, no AOL software needed, I don’t mean that sarcastically either, after years of hearing “welcome to AOL” blurting out it come as a shock for it to just be there. AOL state they only support Thompson routers. What they mean is they only offer tech support to Thompson routers. A router is a router, it passes packets to one place or another. The only thing you might have to do is set the MTU on the router to 1400, this may also apply to your network card of all PCs attached to the router. The one thing you will have to do is make sure your password is 8 letters or less or it will never work in a million years. For your email just use outlook express or any other email client that supports IMAP.If you are using a DSL modem just don’t install the AOL software, just install the modem drivers, put your full screen name in and password (8 or less letters) and away you go. Will now try the shorter password trick and let you know if it works.Can't adjust the MTU in my router/modem setup. That may work although I have a feeling from the post I copied above it will have more to do with the MTU setting.Sorry but I know very little of networking side of things. I just can't get IE6 to connect to sites :(addition - my MTU is set at 1454. Have trouble remembering things from yesterday ley alone 8-9 months back. :( The bit I can't get my head round at th mo is. Your online through AOL browser [That bit I understand] but their browser uses IE6 to access the internet!
