I run a duel boot ( XP & Mandy 10 ) when I boot up and select windows from the LILO splash screen it comes up invalid boot ini file booting to C:/Windows and proceeds as normal.

So I entered msconfig in the run box to see what was wrong with the boot ini file, only to find it is not there any more.

Can anyone tell me what has happened and how to restore the Boot ini file.

To view your Boot.ini you need to view hidden and also system files,

Start/Contol Panel/Folder Options/View......

Then double click My Computer and your C drive.

Mine is:

[boot loader]

timeout=30

default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS

[operating systems]

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition" /fastdetect

Single boot, not double boot.

Just copy yours as it is now, using notepad, save it in My Documents for a rainy day :D

Just re-read your post....... you copy the boot.ini using notepad and then save the file as Boot.ini and copy it to the root of your C Drive.

That's mine, and I dual boot WinXP and FC2... GRUB on my Linux partition handles the boot process BEFORE boot.ini is even loaded.

This sounds like a problem with LILO, not boot.ini
