Hello Moon,As far as I know I had nothing running. I did turn of Messenger. Do not really know how to check. I used to be able to check in Windows 98.

I can make a partition on my Hard drive, as I have partition magic.I also thought that I could install the ext HDD into the computer and then try it that way.

I really would like to restore the image I made,as I have been messing about an awful lot but at present the computer seems to be running ok and feel I should perhaps leave well alone.

I feel a bit upset to think that I cannot just restore the image. Here I was thinking I was secure in case of disaster. Thanks for your help. I really do appreciate your time and effort on my behalf. Badger.

No worries, badger. Yes, you should have an Image available to save you hours of reinstalling.

Let's start again. You need to close as many running programmes as you can before trying to reinstall your Image. With 98SE and Win 2000 I do that by using the Ctrl-Alt-Delete keys. All you need running is Windows Explorer and Systray. Can you try that ?

I'm not saying that this is definitely the problem, just trying to eliminate possibilities.

Hello again, I think I may have confused you by mentioning 98. I am using XP SP2 and when I useCtrl-Alt-Delete I do not get any other progs. running. For instance,I have just done it and this is the only prog. running. I do not know how to stop any other prog.that may be running. for instance Messenger and NAV which I presume are running.

Sorry to be such a nuisance. Badger.

Ctrl-Alt-Delete will bring up Task Manager, just right click to stop any process.

You must have 20 to 30 running Badger.

Also with your Acronis image on the external disk you should be able to install that disk in your machine and boot from the 6 floppys, I would have thought that would work fine.

HIS is a HER!

Thank you bvw I will try first to restore,, as moon suggests using DI.and closing down the running progs.

With regard to Acronis I have not got any floppys. I have the instalation disk and a bootable disk that I made. Do I have to use it. ie Insert disk, then boot, then restore. Is that the problem? I am trying to restore from within windows.

Thought you may like to know moon, that I have unistalled NAV and Norton Firewall. I am using windows firewall and have installed AVG. I took your advice. Thanks.

I tried to restore DI by closing the running progs. with the same result.

Actually now that I have a new anti virus prog etc,I would not want to restore. I shall make a new image, but I still will not know if I can restore it ,if need be. Thank you for your help. Badger

I think you've made a wise choice, badger, and my apologies for assuming you were male. You had such an air of adventure :D

My own firewall, Outpost Pro, no longer has a free version but I believe that Zone Alarm does. Perhaps someone will advise you on its advantages over Windows firewall.

I think you should install Drive Image and then make a partition on your C drive big enough to accept your Image of C. Actually, my partition is twice as big as required. I also seem to recall that I used Drive Image to create the partition but this shouldn't make any difference.

Thank you pops. I will look at that as well as Zone Alarm. I used to use ZA and found it ok with one problem, when I went to MSM Messenger I had to turn it off.

moon Hello again, no need to apologise. my spirit of adventure,as you call it led me to build this computer,Not literally, I only put the bits together but still, one of my boastful accomplishments.
