Audio Driver problems

Recommended Posts

My problem is a bit odd and complicated. I decided to check Windows Update back in August, and I found an audio driver update. Not realizing it needed a Windows 98 disk, I clicked Install anyways, I'm not very computer literate :( Anyways, I didn't have the disk; it was in my brother's house, so I just cancelled the installation. When I rebooted my computer, it seemed that my audio driver had been uninstalled or something, and my VIA PCI audio controller and VIA gameport Joystick were missing. So I re-installed my old audio driver, and everything was working fine. However, whenever I try playing Counter-Strike the game freezes when I reach the beginning menu. When I try disabling my audio controller Counter-Strike works like a charm, except without sound :( When I got hold of the 98 disk and updated it it still didn't work. Does anyone know what might have happened when I tried to install the driver update and what I could do to fix my problem? Any help would be appreciated; as I said I'm not very computer literate and pretty much don't know anything about computer :/

In addition, when I used Windows update, it gave me a driver that didn't even work on my computer :/ Anyways, I pulled out my ABIT CD and tried re-installing my driver but to no success. Sound works but Counter-Strike doesn't. The driver's name was the VIA PCI Audio driver 1.08, which I'm sure is outdated. Could this be the problem. Also, there are three other options in the driver section to install on the disk; VIA service pack 4.16, Flash Utility, and the IDE HDD Low Level Format Utility. Should I re-install these? I'm not sure what I should do, a cousin did most of the installation for me the first time.
