MonicaX Posted October 7, 2004 Report Share Posted October 7, 2004 I’m trying to network my laptop and desktop through a wireless router.Both machines have XP sp2Both machines share the same username and password Both machines are in the same workgroup.The desktop is the primary machine.I’m able to see both computers, on both machines when I click “view workgroup computer.” I can access the files on the laptop from the desktop. I can print from the laptop. However, I when I click on the desktop computer’s icon on the laptop, I get this message:\\ “Computer name” is not accessible. You may not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.”I’ve gone through numerous check lists, including the exhaustive one below. Most of the tutorials and forum threads are pre-sp2. Most of the “solutions” people come up with for similar issues seem completely arbitrary. I’ve used wizard/nowizard, enabled NetBios/ over TCP/IP, automatic IP, static IP, file sharing on all the folders and drives, fire wall, no fire wall, virus protection off/on, turning the lights off and on, herbal remedies, prayer, threats. MonicaX Posted October 7, 2004 Author Report Share Posted October 7, 2004 I did install the software for my router. As far as I know it's configured properly. I've read the basics of home networking. If I've gotton it to work -- printing, intertnet connection, accesing and file sharing form the desktop to the laptop -- it seems like there must be a solution. I've read at that link, and there's nothing there that I haven't done. homecomputeraid Posted October 15, 2004 Report Share Posted October 15, 2004 If the two computers can "see" each other, I doubt the problem has anything at all to do with the wireless setup. You should make sure the user you have set up is an administrator on both PC's. To look at the hard drive of the Desktop from the Laptop, go to Start, Run on the laptop and type in \\desktopnetworkname\c$. (replace desktopnetworkname with your computer's actual network name). If a browser window opens up showing you the contents of your Desktop, you know you have administrative rights to the Desktop with the username you're logged in with.If this doesn't work, please post here, and we'll work on it!Sincerely, Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
homecomputeraid Posted October 18, 2004 Report Share Posted October 18, 2004 I found this Microsoft Knowledge Base Article about a problem with XP Service Pack 2, and networking after you apply it.Even though the KB Article references an event log error, it is in reference to an XP machine with SP2.If you call Microsoft Support about this, make sure you reference this specific article, and they should waive the usual support fees!
