Chris Posted October 9, 2004 Report Share Posted October 9, 2004 I've being playing with this idea for a few months now and I've always come to the same conclusion that it is not currently worth it for, well what I use my computer for.But I guess I could think of it from another way: I've spent the money, set it up and it's running like a dream and i'm thinking "What would I NOT do with a file server". :rolleyes: Anyway, nothing special as there will not 10, 000 computers accessing it so I can forget about that 160gigz of RAM :PNow it'll connect on the Network via the router plugged into a NIC.Would like 2 HDD partioned...Probably XP Pro....Now I want to set up permissions to the server. Sir Radfordin Posted October 9, 2004 Report Share Posted October 9, 2004 Have only really played with the perimssions in a domain environment which is always going to be different to a workgroup. However you can have some fun setting up shares using the normal 'sharing' route or you can set NTFS permissions. Sharing is the nice simple option but NTFS can be more secure. You need to think logically when setting permissions and work out which ones need to be inherited from parents etc. Windows 2003 server handles things differently to NT/2000 server just to confuse matters!Happy playing (you should get out more!!) I use 2K pro at work and it has a crap load of options, and I have XP Home at home, so I imagine it would be the best of both worlds.
