-pops- Posted October 16, 2004 Report Share Posted October 16, 2004 I've just opened my bt yahoo browser to do my weekly spam clearout and was met by Prevx asking me if I wanted to allow yum.exe to connect to the Internet. Well, no I didn't! I don't let anything connect unless I know what it's connected with. So, I refused and carried on clearing the spam trap.Afterwards, I did an Internet search and was informed by Google that yum.exe was, as I suspected, a, shall we say, "undesirable" site. I was a bit miffed by this as my keenness and fortitude in maintaining a clean machine is very high. I then did a search in my machine and it came up with four entries, one connected with PSP (yummy - a graphic effect) and three associated with Yahoo Update Manager. Nowhere on Google, that I could find, gives this meaning to yum.exe so it looks as though I've missed out on updating Yahoo :( The moral of this story is, well, I don't know other than Yahoo should give a better name or explanation of what their software is attempting to do rather than make me think it's trying to connect to a pornographer. cd108 Posted October 16, 2004 Report Share Posted October 16, 2004 Pops im using prevx at the moment and although i can see the advantages of using it I have to say i wouldnt recomend it to the majority of net users I know. Prevx is in my opinion Vague at times about what its informing you off, I think most people are flumoxed when asked, and i quote: "file system query opera internet browser is voilating security setting vulnerable file protection by trying to access protected system fle....c:windows\win.ini process: opera.exe [856]" Effectivness of the app? too early to say but for ease of use I give it 2 out of 10. That's why I was particularly curious when this yum thing came up.In regard to it's way of expressing things, I'm quite used to that sort of language - a look at the wording in my posts will soon show that :) My concern in this yum.exe was not so much Prevx indicating it to me but the fact that there was little or no indication on Google (or Yahoo) as to what it was or did, except that is may have been somethin I most certainly didn't want (porn).
