Matt M
I was getting two boxes appearing upon logon to XP, DrvmCDB and Diagnostic Traces. I took some advice from Dell to get rid of these dialogue boxes, which involved removing files from the registry. Since doing this I now cannot access my PC at all and just keep getting a blue screen saying windows won't open to prevent damage from occuring. Can anybody help, what can I do to get my PC back up and running?
bvw
Try starting in Safe Mode, tap the F8 key whilst booting, and see if you can use System Restore to restore to a point before you had this problem. If that works, after booting up check in MSCONFIG ( start/run and type msconfig) under Start and look for ssdiag which may be your problem. If it's listed remove the tick from the start up list and try a re-boot.
-pops-
Someone else had a similar problem http://forums.thatcomputerguy.us/lofiversi....php/t4311.html Yours seems to be more advanced, though in that you have carried out some, perhaps unwise, instruction from Dell. What is the full message you are getting on your blue screen? It may mean you having to re-install Windows. You do have an XP disc, either the Dell version or a full version, don't you?
Matt M
The Blue screen roughly says "windows has shut to prevent damage, check viruses, remove any newly installed hard drive/controlllers, run CHKDSK/FTech InfoSTOP:0X0000007B (0XF8A8ESZ8,0X0000034,0X00000000,0X00000000)Managed to run CHKDSK/F last night but was no use. Was thinking of trying to reinstall XP as a last resort (I do have the disk), but may raise with Dell first as PC is still covered under their 1 year C&C. -pops-
Yes, do refer your problem to Dell. After all, it was their advice that may have put you in this position.I wouldn't hold too much hope out, though. I don't know what exclusions Dell make to warranties but often, software problems are not covered.
