installed TTF fonts gradually disappear

Hi,

I have a big problem with my Windows 98 notebook. Even though the ttf fonts seemed to be installed on my computer in c:\windows\fonts, I cannot use them. How come?

To be more specific, I cannot use Arial.ttf (among other fonts) with the Internet Explorer and MS Office (it seems that all programs are affected by this phenomenon). For example, in Word I cannot choose Arial.ttf from the list of fonts altough according to the system it is installed.

Additionally, when I open the font directory c:\windows\fonts, usually a font viewer would display a sample of the font by double clicking on the respective ttf file. But in my case, the computer does not do anything. No display of font samples in the viewer.

Do I have a virus even though my anti-virus scanner does not detect any?

ich habe ein Problem.

Auf meinem Windows 98 Laptop verschwinden seit geraumer Zeit Stückchenweise die Schrifttypen, die aber im Verzeichnis c:\windows\fonts installiert sind!

Woran liegt das?

Konkret sieht das so aus, dass sich seit heute (obwohl Arial.ttf) installiert, Arial nicht mehr auf dem Rechner korrekt angezeigt wird. Weder im Internet Explorer noch in Word oder Excel. Wenn ich die Schriftype (z.B. auf arial.TTF) in Word ändern will, zeigt er nur noch einen Bruchteil der Schriften in der Auswahlleiste an, die eigentlich installiert ist.

Ein weiterer Hinweis. Wenn ich Im Schriftverzeichnis c:\windows\fonts eine ttf-Datei normalerweise doppelt anklicke, erscheint ein Probeansicht der Schrifttype. Bei mir funktioniert dies aber nicht mehr.

Habe ich hier ein Virenproblem, obwohl mein Virenscanner nichts entdeckt?

nope, it has nothing to do with too many fonts since i did not install any new ones. The number of installed fonts are very modest. there should be no problem because of the number of fonts.

are there other suggestions?

hi,

scandisk ausprobiert, defrag auch. hat alles nichts geholfen.

habe dann windows im sicherheits-modus gestarted (d.h. beim booten F5-Taste gedrückt und diesen modus gewählt).

und siehe da, windows erkannte ploetzlich alle ttf fonts in ms office (z.B. ms. word).

wieso das?

brauche hilfe.

Ich habe alle fonts verloren ausser die mit *.fon.

I've run scandisk and also defrag, but the situation is the same. Even though all fonts are installed (at least they appear to be in the font directory) only a few can be used by my computer somehow.

I made another discovery. I started windows in "secure mode" or whatever you call it... that's when the computer boots, I pressed F5 where you can choose if you want Windows 98 to load in a normal way or other way or just have DOS...

so I booted my computer in this "secure mode" and then I checked if the computer could use the ttf fonts. And surprisingly when I opened MS Word and other applications I had all ttf fonts available. I wonder why this is so.

Obviously, this state is not a solution because this secure mode loads only the minimun number of drivers necessary. So therefore, I cannot do many things in this mode.

Anyone has an advice?

Try putting in the System installation disc and tell it to install. You cannot do any harm at all, and it may replace any missing or corrupted files.

hello,

my system installation disc is called "recovery disc". it starts in MS-DOS and says, the computer will be set up in the factory default setting meaning that everything will be formatted before I will get a working workstation.

because I ahve loads of data and software installed on my computer and I customized my computer a lot, formattting seems to be the solution in the worst possible case.

please help!!!

It may be that your system fonts have been corrupted by using other application's fonts. Try a complete restore of system fonts by using the method described in this Microsoft article. Click here

[Edit] This will remove all none Microsoft fonts from your system and replace with Microsoft fonts only. Make a note of any none Microsoft fonts and move them to a separate folder unless you have access to them from a application CD. Replace these fonts one by one until you find the problem font.

I did as some of you have said. Yes, I try to "Install font" C:\Windows\Fonts.

I copied a font from C:\Windows\Fonts to my desktop and then deleted the original ttf file in C:\Windows\Fonts. then I try to install the font.

I selected the right path C:\Windows\Desktop and the installation window would identify the font with the right name. I selected the entry from a list. then I pushed "OK" button.

But then it was strange. There was no reaction from the program that the font installation was completed as it would usually. So I checked C:\Windows\Fonts, but I could not find the file in the directory. The font was obviously not installed.

Now, so you get it right... as for the rest of my original fonts. They are physically in C:\Windows\Fonts. I checked it with MS-DOS and with the Windows Explorer. However, again... the windows operating system seems not to be able to load the ttf files for some reason. So I still have trouble reading files in MS Word because the font formatting is not displayed in a right way.

Do we have any real experts in this forum who is so benevolent to give me some advice on this problem. Any suggestion is greatly appreciated!!! thanx

Have you done an on-line virus scan? try housecall or Panda

Also, have you checked for trojans, spyware, adware?

If all this fails, you might want to run a HiJackThis scan and post the results here. For details of how to do this, look under the HiJackThis header on the forum. If you run a HJT scan, do NOT delete anything until one of the forum experts has looked at it.
