Reinstalling Outlook Express

First: This is one of the most useful fora on Windows; many knowledgeable people here! :D

My problem: URLs like news:// or nntp:// do not open Outlook Express any more.

The question: How to reinstall Outlook Express?

Microsoft sez to use sfc /scannow

Google returns a number of other solutions, but none of them work.

The real question: Is there a way to reinstall Outlook Express on Windows XP SP2 ? (I do have a slipstreamed XP-SP2 CD-ROM available).

What happened when you tried sfc /scannow ?

First try this and say if it works:

Start > Control Panel > Add / Remove Programs > Set Program Access and Defaults

and then set Outlook Express as your default email client.

System File Checker ran for quite a while, did lots of access to the SP2 CD-ROM, and ended successfully. But nothing changed (see details below).

Tried this (although I use Outlook 2003 as email client), but no change in behavior.

Here is what happens (didn't describe that in my original post):

Enter a news URL, e.g. news://msnews.microsoft.com/ in either Start->Run or the browser's address bar.

From Start->Run: pop-up message "The parameter is incorrect."

From Mozilla Firefox: pop-up message "news is not a registered protocol."

From Internet Explorer: nothing happens at all.

Absolutely! Whenever there's a Mahler symphony performed in town, I go. Fortunately that is quite often.

Have you ever seen Juzo Itami's film Tampopo? It's a wonderful film - all about food, and 90% of the film score is from Mahler's symphony no. 1.

Since I cannot resolve the issue with Outlook Express, I have decided to install Mozilla Thunderbird, hoping that an news:// or nntp:// URL would open Thunderbird.

But nope -- it still doesn't open any of the newsreaders.

One advantage of TB over OE: I can send a character encoding in TB; I can specify a character encoding in OE, but it never sends the encoding - it is just dropped when sending the message.

Usenet news normally has to be operated through OE and attempts to obtain it through a browser will result in the messages you are experiencing.

If its a Usenet news reader you are looking for, try http://nnr.freeservers.com/

If its a reader for downloading pictures, it is better to use a robot such as http://www.newsrobot.com/sbnews/

These do not rely on a browser or email client such as OE to operate but they do need your news client address from your ISP

I've been having a play around with the program from the first link I gave http://nnr.freeservers.com/ and find it a very effective newsreader.

It operates in a different way to OE so you will have to bear that in mind if you try it but, on the whole Very Good :)
