doug
Suddenly my Digi IXUS v camera cannot be recognised by my computer. I have tried the usual uninstall routine which includes searching and deleting all instances of Canon files. Emptying recycle bin, disk clean up and defragging then re-booting. Have then tried re-installing from the original disk/installing a fresh download of the driver from the canon website. All result in the same problem. After I've plugged the camera into the USB cable when I switch the camera on I get a rapid 3 dongs on the speaker. Going to device manager I get a yellow ! next to the camera. clicking on it I get an error message sayingQuoteWindows cannot load the device driver for this hardware because a previous instance of the device driver is still in memory. (Code 38)Click Troubleshoot to start the troubleshooter for this device. unquote.Following through the troubleshoot link all I get is reference to M$ security issues.Any suggestions desparately required. djohn
Checked through google on this doug and there are plenty of people having the exact same error code and being directed to use the trouble shooter which only leads them to the M/S page, as you have found.Problem occurs with different cameras - scanners and other USB hardware. Can't seem to pin down the answer to any one single item. There are a few suggestions but no replies to say if they worked or not.The one suggestion that cropped up on several occasions was to remove the drivers for any and all USB hardware and start again, loading each one until you find the conflict. Is your camera connected direct to the PC or do you use a card reader? [Just seen your reply regarding the reader]. :( Any other USB hardware connected to the PC?
doug
Yes I've got a scanner connected. Ah well will have to re-install it. So I'll delete that and try again. The scanner is a twain device but the digi is installed as a WIA.
rong
Not an expert but I would say the camera has a problem, but if it still takes pictures then the best thing to do is buy a card reader (probebly the cheapest to)
doug
Just following up DJ's suggestion. Back later.
doug
Well I've sort of got it sorted. There's a conflict with the scanner. Deleted both scanner and camera. To cut a long story short I have a conflict if the scanner and camera are connected to the computer at the same time. With either unplugged then the other works. I can live with this. The only remaining problem is that when I download the pics from the camera I cannot send them directly to where I want. It seems to default to my pictures in my documents. Bit of a pain if this keeps up as I'll have to copy them all individually to the desired folder, except that each day's shots are sent to new folders for each day. Tried to change the settings but it wont let me.Will get back tomorrow to see if there are any further suggestions. Thanks for help so far. djohn
Found this doug. Same camera, same problem with a link to M/S site regarding conflicts in device manager. Camera and scanner should find their own IQ automatically but sometimes you need to alter the range manually choosing a range of between 0-9. M/S link gives details on what to try. http://tinyurl.com/4uc26

doug
I'm back DJ. Managed to get the pics off the camera. Have read through the link you gave and it tells me to do exactly what I've discovered the hard way. In fact it says to connect one imaging device and reboot. To use another device, disconnect the first the connect the second and reboot. I found that I don't have to reboot. My problem now appears to be even more complex. Before the problem when I switched the camera on a dialogue box used to appear showing a list of applications to use to download the images. All I get now is an empty box, in fact 2 - one behind the other. Device manager shows that the camera is correctly installed both using the original CD and with the updated driver. However, there are now 2 further issues. I can download images using the original driver but the updated driver says that the camera is not installed. In both cases, even though device manager is OK, in scanners and cameras although the camera model is shown it says it's not connected. This is a lie opening the page with the camera off shows an empty page. When I switch the camera on it's icon then appears. If I click on it it the repeats the lie. Something weird has happened. For the present I'll have to uninstall and go back to the original driver - at least I was able to download the images using that!
