Have you made any recent changes to your machine - inside or outside, software or hardware?

May be worth checking that all connectors to the errant drive are fully pushed home.

Have you tried a System Restore to a time when the device was working properly?

Optical drives are by far from being robust pieces of equipment and can die without any apparent fault or warning. Do you have a spare drive that you could replace your current one with to check that it hasn't gone to the great electronic dumping ground in the sky?

A new drive - even a DVD RW - would not be particularly expensive so if it is the drive that has met its demise, it isn't worth spending time and money trying to repair it.
