I don't know of a portable device that would run off batteries or something.Do you mean a Firewall? Yes, you should definitely have one if you're accessing a public wireless network. I'm not too clear on whether you're using your own wireless network, or using a public one. Either way, I think your primary concern should be keeping people off your laptop with a software firewall, which it sounds like you're already using.
