Recommended Posts

PC to repair...

Takes 30 minutes to load Windows XP...

Works for about 10 seconds then pointer freezes...

Safe mode.Gets so far then BSOD "Unmounted boot device"...

Debugging mode.Gets so far, error "ntoskl.exe is missing or corrupt"...

Recovery console.gets so far, locks up ("Examining 19540 MB at ide0 on bus 0 on atapi"...

Reformat.Get so far, locks up ("Examining 19540 MB at ide0 on bus 0 on atapi"...

Can I safely assume the HDD is shot?

Shirl.

PS Last time I had a HDD to replace didn't someone (Erm Boris?) say that Excelstor drives were ok?...

80GB EXCELSTOR / HITACHI HARD DRIVE, 7200 RPM, 2MB CACHE, ATA-100, 3 YR WARRANTY. £37.50 (Client doesn't need a particularly fast drive TBH)

Yes - I have 4 of the 60GB Excelstors - each still showing 100% SMART readings after around 3,500 hours of use (approx 1200 boots) in about 18 months.

I presume that the 80GBs are just as robust ?
