non-functioning shortcut key combinations

Hello,

After installing SP2, it seems that I can no longer use certain combinations of ctrl-alt-(letter): ctrl-alt-I, ctrl-alt-D, and ctrl-alt-L. When I input these as keyboard shortcuts in program properties, or try to map ctrl-alt-I as a keystroke to a button on my wireless mouse, the field just goes back to displaying "none" as if the combination was an invalid possibility. Nothing else happens.

I have a program that uses ctrl-alt-I for a function that I use A LOT, and it now no longer recognizes that key combo.

The caps and num lock keys don't seem to affect anything.

Any suggestions? Am I missing something really easy here? Thanks, David.

Those key combinations do nothing on my machines but then, I never knew that they did.

You can assign specific shortcut keys to applications. For instance pops, right-click on your "Firefox" shortcut, and go to "Properties".

There should be a "Shortcut Key" box, where you can enter a shortcut key. When you hit that key combo, Firefox will launch. This is what is not working.

OP: Have you tried reassigning the shortcut keys, in case SP2 reset them?

I was wondering if they had some (unknown to me) standard function.

Re-assignment was going to be my suggestion in case the above wasn't the case. :)

Those key combos don't have any inherent function that I know of, outside of specific programs.

What I am talking about is, apparently I can't assign them to any shortcut, or even use them in a program that uses them.

In scuzzman's scenario if I right-click on the Firefox icon, go properties->shortcut, then click on the "shortcut key" field, then hold down ctrl+alt+I (or D, or L), the field switches back to the default "None", instead of registering that key combo. Any other ctrl+alt+(letter) shows up in the field just as it should.

I think this is pretty weird. Somehow the system is reserving these combos for something, maybe?

I had to interrupt my install of SP2, uninstall it and then re-install it, and I'm wondering if that screwed something up. . .

Does your keyboard have anything more than the basic keyboard functions i.e. use extra software over that intrinsic to Windows?

If so, try re-installing that to see if you get these functions back

I just installed IntelliType Pro which Microsoft recommends for the model of keyboard that I have, and it doesn't change the problem. Ah well, I just emailed Microsoft SP2 tech support, so we'll see what comes of that as well. I'm pretty curious to find out what it is.

I got it. hkcmd.exe -- Intel hotkey command function -- was causing a conflict.

Deleted the process and I'm fine. :)
