homer
hello, I have winxp, a billion5100 modem that is configured through a browser. I have a static ip assigned by my isp, and my lan settings are set to automatic(default). My pc is connected to port1 and everything is fine.when I try to connect my laptop to port 2, I cannot access the internet. I cannot ping my modem. I have no clue about networking etc... At this point I'm guessing it has something to do with the static ip assignment. Should I have created a new Lan to incorporate my laptop first, before trying to access the internet?btw what is a gateway and what address should be put there? at the moment I left it as nothing.any help would be appreciated. Be it the internet, an intranet, or another type of network.As for the netowrk trouble, simply set your laptop to "Obtain an IP Automatically", and it should work fine. If it's Windows XP, follow these instructions:Select “Start”Select “Control Panel” Click “Network and Internet Connections” In the lower-right, select “Network Connections” Right Click on “Local Area Connection”Select “Properties” Click on “Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)” to highlight it Click the “Properties” buttonEnsure “Obtain IP Address” and “Obtain DNS Server Address” are set to automaticIf this doesn't do it, let us know the following information:The IP Address of your modemThe output of "ipconfig /all"To do this, go to Start, select "Run"Type in cmdYou'll some to a prompt that looks similar (not exaclty) to this:C:\Documents and Settings\User\>Type this in:ipconfig /all > C:\output.txtNow paste the contents of C:\output.txt in here, make sure to enclose it inside of this: [code] TEXT GOES HERE [ /code]Just so you know, the output should be similar to this:Windows 2000 IP Configuration Host Name . . . . . . . . . . . . : WBLTQ14 Primary DNS Suffix . . . . . . . : Node Type . . . . . . . . . . . . : Hybrid IP Routing Enabled. . . . . . . . : No WINS Proxy Enabled. . . . . . . . : No DNS Suffix Search List. . . . . . : verizon.wblt.calltechEthernet adapter Local Area Connection: Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : verizon.wblt.calltech Description . . . . . . . . . . . : VIA Rhine II Fast Ethernet Adapter Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00-0A-E6-9A-74-AB DHCP Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : Yes Autoconfiguration Enabled . . . . : Yes IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 10.129.20.164 Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0 Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 10.129.20.1 DHCP Server . . . . . . . . . . . : 10.129.0.52 DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 10.129.0.52 10.132.0.52 Primary WINS Server . . . . . . . : 10.129.0.52 Lease Obtained. . . . . . . . . . : Monday, January 10, 2005 3:07:11 AM Lease Expires . . . . . . . . . . : Monday, January 10, 2005 1:07:11 PM
