Realtek 8139 vanished!!!

Recommended Posts

This is so frustrating!

One day i tried to connect to another PC to transfer files and nothing happened. Naturally i went straight to Device Manager to check on the NICs status and it wasn't there! No reason to panic i thought...

Turned off PC. reseated the card... nothing

Transfered card to another PCI slot... nothing

Replaced the card with another one... XP didn't even see it

Hmmm...

'Show Hidden Devices' in Device Manager showed me the Realtek packet scheduler miniport but no NIC

On startup BIOS recognises Network Adapter on IRQ 11

In System Info>Components>Problem Devices it says 'device is disabled'. How do I enable it if it doesn't appear in Device Manager????!

Unfortunately as i only network occasionally i can't nail down what caused it as i don't know exactly when it stopped working. It could be around the time I installed SP2 though

Sledge-Hammer time!

Try this:

Run->services.msc and see if Plug and play service is started ... Also Shell Hardware Detection should be started... And have a look at Network conections (dont know if this counts)

And try to plug the card in another slot on the mainboard ...

BTW: I think at least half the computer users use Realtek 81XX :D ...

I tried services.msc and they're all 'started'

I tried moving the card to another slot but had no effect. In fact, when I used a different card (Adaptec something-or-other) that wasn't recognised either.

How can something be classed as 'disabled' in System Info but not appear in Device Manager, disabled or otherwise?

I'm quite out of ideeas ... :( ...

Go to Device Manager and from the View menu select "Show hidden devices"..

If the network card is listed and disabled, enable it (right click on it-> Enable).. If it isn't disabled...well I'l think about that :) ...
