homecomputeraid
Ok, that definitely makes sense, to VPN in to take remote control of your server using Remote Desktop. So, the PC's that aren't VPNed on your LAN, are they having any problems communicating, or is it just Remote Desktop that's acting up? Vasichko
Ok, heres the deal... I can VPN to my server using remote desktop no problem. But when I want to VPN to a client pc using remote desktop, it tells my the pc may be busy or the network is not set up correctly. I am using the IP address that the DHCP has assigned to that PC.I have given my user rights to Dial-in, and that particular PC does have Remote Desktop enabled... Vasichko
And on the clients I can see the other pcs on the network, I can access network folders and so forth.I just want to be able to tunnel in and remote desktop the damn SOBs... homecomputeraid
Vasichko, Are you saying that from home, you want to VPN into the Server, then control a Desktop with Remote Desktop? You can't terminate a VPN session to a desktop to my knowledge. So, the VPN connection should terminate at the Server, and once that's up, you should be able to use Remote Desktop to get to the PC's. Does that make sense to you? Once you VPN to the Server, can you ping the PC's?
Vasichko
Even when I VPN to the server I cant remotely connect to the clients. No I have not yet tried pinging the PCs...
homecomputeraid
Pleaes let me know whether you can ping, and we'll go from there. :)
Vasichko
Wait wait... In order to do this... Do I first have to VPN into my server, then connect using remote desktop to the Client PC???Im asking this because when I check my IP using a client PC on www.whatismyip.com it gives me the same IP as my server. And if I am at home trying to ping the client, the request times out.So Im assuming that I cannot just directly connect to a client pc without VPNing the server first right??? homecomputeraid
You only have to VPN if you're not on the local network. If you're on the LAN, you don't want to VPN. Just use Remote Desktop to connect.
Vasichko
Yeah thats what im talking about. If I am not local and want access to the desktop of one of the clients. I have to VPN the sever first, then access the desktop of the client correct???There isnt any other way around it.
homecomputeraid
No way that will afford your network any kind of security. I recommend running a port scan from outside on your network using a scanner like Shield's Up! to make sure you only have necessary ports open. So, from outside, VPN into your Server, then use Remote Desktop to connect to and administer the PC's. Make sure that you can ping the desktops through the VPN tunnel before troubleshooting the Remote Desktop software too much. If you can't ping, you'll be chasing your tail! :)
Vasichko
Yup I can ping from client to client. So I guess Im good to go then???
homecomputeraid
If you're saying you can ping a desktop from outside when you're VPNed into the Server, then you're good to go to try Remote Desktop and troubleshoot that.
Vasichko
Yeah all thats correct... Damn I feel like an idiot I was thinking about doing something without stopping to look at the logics of it....
homecomputeraid
It happens to us all. Be the packet. :)I try to visualize what I'm actually trying to do with the data flow. Sometimes it helps me avoide mistakes.
