Since Uninstalling SecureIE, Major Probs

Sorry for the wordiness... I try to answer most questions you may have in the details provided..

I will supply any info you want, any screen capture, and just got HijackThis,

so... all ready.

I installed SecureIE last month.

After 1 day, I hated it, can't recall why, but the memory has been overshadowed by a recurring prob I have faced since then. Oh yeah, it wasn't fully featured it was a limited demo.

By the way, the intention was simply to get away from IE. I have since gone to firefox (only complaints - have to use the inferior sun java - unless someone can tell me how to enlarge fonts in the applets it creates - I HATE SUN JAVA- big yahoo pool freak, you see ---- other complaint - example - on bbs's and in yahoo mail if there is a editing box with lots of enhanced editing features available in IE, in firefox they do not show up, nor does it ask if I wish to install an activex control in that situation - o well, in every other regard, its fine)

HERE's THE RUB:

I cannot guarantee prob was caused by SECUREIE but I suspect it was the case. As it started right after I uninstalled it.

I'm on a P4 HT 2.6ghz

1012 ram

dialup modem (lucent winmodem - i tried to get different drivers, didn't seem to help)

Sometimes right when I start up my isp connection, most always in fact, everything freezes no Firefox browser opens, Start button USUALLY but not always freezes. Taskbar shortcuts for quicklinks freezes. If I right click on connection and disconnect sometimes it does but icon still there, sometimes won't at all and remains connected.

Sometimes it unfreezes on its own after a minute, maybe 1 in 15 times, when I have the patience to wait and see.

Usually I reboot, eyeing the hammer on my bookshelf. :blink:

If I open a firefox window before (while unconnected) my isp dials up, I can get it to remain working 4 outta 5 times.

I could do a reformat, but would prefer not to if its fixable.

The only stuff on the net I could find that related to

taskbar freezes seemed to imply that it was related to faulty default modem drivers in xp for lucent winmodem. But I have not been able to absolutely confirm this is causing my prob here.

I took out the modem and attempted to find better drivers according to the chipsets, but not sure if I succeeded, pretty sure I didn't.

What do you think?

Have you contacted the suppliers of the software to get their opinion?

Even though it may have been only a demo version, it is in their interest to have happy customers and as it seems to have mangled your system, it is not good publicity for them.

I really cannot see how SecureIE can justify charging $100 or so for web browser software when there is a large selection of similar, free stuff available.

BTW, I use Firefox as do a number of members here and are very happy with it.

No I have not, but it is a good suggestion... I simply did a search on google, and when I saw no other similar complaints, I figured they would be as much use as anyone if it was a new prob.

I notice fireforx sometimes reports it is unable to connect to a site for no good reason.

This in fact just happened whn I tried to get to yahoo, 1st mail, then the main page link, neither worked. I was mystified, so I opened IE and went to yahoo... it worked. Then when I went back to firefox, IT worked.

Firefox does in fact seem to have WAY more probs than I ever experienced with IE. Sorry to say. I do like its usability more than IE, but IE has rarely been the source of many probs for me. It is only cuz it is such a well-known security risk that I have made the jump to other browsers of late. Plus, I'm a naturally inquisitive kinda guy.

Does anyone know what might be the cause of the prob?

Tell me what info you require to help diagnosis, and I will provide it.

In the meanwhile I will contact secure IE, direct them to this thread, and see what they have to say...

i think it was spyware related...

not sure, but since running a few checkers, found one dialer mayhaps was the prob..

if prob returns will let ya know...

My wife has the same problem. She was enduring the fonts until the latest version then it was taking forever to load a game. It loaded faster when we were still using 56k dialup and she had P200 using MS java. I finally tracked down the MS java engine for her and now her games load much faster and display fonts correctly. It may be insecure but at least the user experience is better.

All fine and good BUT

I have MSVM installed, and use it for IExplorer, but Firefox, you see, only allows the use of Sun Java, and its interminably horrible version of it therein.

Which interminably horrible version of Sun Java do you have - J2SE™ Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 3 ? It works perfectly fine for me on both IE and FF.

Added: Make sure you install all fonts when installing the Java Runtime Environment for best results.
