LADYDEB Posted February 14, 2005 Report Share Posted February 14, 2005 Hi there,My dad has asked me to ask you guys how he can switch from using his current 10gig internal hard drive, to his external 40gig hard drive. He wants this to be the main hard drive as he's having problems transferring files etc from the small drive to the larger drive.Is there a simple grandpops type explanation that won't frazzle him??Computers are a ever frustrating mystery to him (not unlike me, just ask SCUZZMAN ~ the man of everlasting patience!).Any help would be greatly appreciated.RegardsLADYDEB Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
-pops- Posted February 14, 2005 Report Share Posted February 14, 2005 It isn't normally possible to use an external drive as the main hard drive (the "C" drive containing the operating system) as external components rely on Windows to provide the drivers and software to be able to operate. If Windows is only loaded on an external device the BIOS (motherboard) will be unable to locate it or an operating system and the computer will not boot.The small drive should easily accomodate Windows and the majority of programs. Files and other "stuff" could then be placed on the other drive.Don't forget that most desktop computer motherboards are equipped to take two hard drives within their case.
