ɹəuəllıʍ ʇɐb Posted February 16, 2005 Report Share Posted February 16, 2005 A friend of mine - 10,000km away - has written me in despair that he cannot access certain websites, e.g. his bank at http://www.raiffeisen.ch/ or even the Microsoft website. He also cannot get any more mail using OE, but he can access his mail via webmail.He has Win98SE, Norton antivirus, and 3 different antispyware tools - all up-to-date.I have asked him to install & run Ccleaner (to clear the Internet cache)I have asked him to install and try Firefox - same resultI have asked him to ping some of the URLs he can't access - he gets a program not found error for pingAny other suggestions before I recommend him to reinstall Windows? He has spent hours and hours on the phone with his ISP's support desk, as well as with Microsoft support (paying per minute), and no-one seems to be able to help him.One more interesting observation: he has exactly the same situation at home and at his business.[added] I should know better than using vague terms like "cannot access"; what happens is that he's getting timeouts on IE (and FF) and OE. If PING.EXE truely wasn't found, the error would be:'ping' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file.Or:Bad command or file name. ɹəuəllıʍ ʇɐb Posted February 16, 2005 Author Report Share Posted February 16, 2005 It was actually "Bad command or file name" in German; I translated it incorrectly.But I may have misunderstood his comment; I asked him to type 'cmd' in Start -> Run, but I think on Win98 it was 'command' - that's what caused the error (not ping).Anyway, I have instructed him how to find the Command Prompt on the start menu; that should enable him to PING.I have tried to ping the website he cannot access, but I get "Request timed out" errors. It may be that they do not allow ping on their site (but I can access the website via browser).I mainly want to see what IP address he gets.P.S. If I traceroute to that IP address [195.141.7.25] I get stuck somewhere at sunrise.ch, so my friend will probably get no better result.
