Is an XP-install hardware specific?

I've got a new Dell P4 machine with system software on it. I'm wondering if I can take the drive out of it and put it in my P3 machine and have that machine boot up and work ok.

If it did work, would it be horribly slow? It was a pretty fast machine in 2000 or so, but I assume xp needs more resources than whatever os it used back then.

The first problem you will have is due to it being a Dell machine.

Dell use all sorts of non-standard parts and it is highly likely that from this alone you will have problems.

In addition XP "knows" tha machine it was designed for and will not work if it doesn't recognise the majority of the hardware it has to work with.

yep yer gonna have probs. unless you wipe the drive clean and install xp again. but it has to be a different os than what was on it. cuz the one thats on it now is already registered to that machine. so pops is right.

if you have the os disk with the other machine(the one you want to put drive in) then wipe drive and install that ones os disk. youll have to reactivate once done.
