mark2 Posted April 18, 2003 Report Share Posted April 18, 2003 This is a problem becoming more and more common.To see if messenger is disabled/blocked or not.Start > run > net send 127.0.0.1 "test" if it pops up, you have messenger enabled.Here are some instructions to prevent the popups.For XP1) Start->Settings->Control Panel2) Administrative Tools3) Component Services4) Services (Local)5) Right click on "Messenger" select "Stop"6) Right click on "Messenger" select "properties"7) For "Startup Type" select "Manual"For 95Use add/remove programs > windows setup and remove winpopup from 'accessories'For 98/MEAdd/remove programs > windows setup and remove winpopup from system tools.Also block NetBIOS ports 135, 137, 138. and 139 with your firewall.you can also disable netbiosIn order to check if you have NetBIOS installed over TCP/IP in your Win9xsystem, look up its properties in (Start -> Configuration -> Control Panel-> Network -> TCP/IP -> Properties -> NetBIOS tab), where there is a checkbox that allowsyou to disable it.Hope this helps Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

mark2 Posted May 5, 2003 Author Report Share Posted May 5, 2003 Just a thought , the software will only do what you can do with the above instructions, and you can also prevent the same problem in 9x systems following the instructions above.Ok for the total novice I suppose, but just as simple to do it yourself really. I get an occasional one but this little beggar was persistent. Anyway, followed Mark's instructions and switched Messenger to manual.
