LeatherLunch Posted March 6, 2005 Report Share Posted March 6, 2005 I'm trying to clean up my buddy's computer here, and while I'm trying to scour is of adware/spyware/viruses via Hijack this, adaware, spybot and the like, I'm still having some problems with other stuff.Explorer keeps crashing for seemingly no reason. Sometimes it's when I try to go to Download.com, but it always seems to happen when I'm trying to get software to clean the system up. Suspicious, no?When I try to do an online scan with Pandasoft, or Trend Microsystems, or the like, I'm told that my security settings prohibit activex applications, so I can't download the software neccessary to do the scan. I've tried checking my settings under Internet Options, but I can't determine where the problem lies. Again, I suspect that something in the system doesn't want to allow me to scan the computer.I can't seem to set the Internet Homepage. If I go to Internet Options and put in, say, google.com and press apply, it still comes up as a spyware induced "search" page instead.I also can't change the desktop/wallpaper from the current ad for antispyware to anything else.The system is running Windows XP, and I don't have a installation disc to reinstall the OS. I do, however, have my disc for Windows 2000 Professional. When put that in the drive, though, it tells me that it is an older version of Windows, and therefore it is disallowing startup capacity. If I want to uninstall XP and install 2000 to "start over" with the computer's OS, how can I do that? If I delete XP, will all the data and software remain on the disc?Any help would be appreciated. The problem is that "my security settings" prohibit the use of it. I've checked my settings and they're fine as far as I can tell, but I still can't download stuff like Java, or Pandasoft.com's online antivirus scan. If I delete XP, will all the data and software remain on the disc?Any help would be appreciated.hi i cleaned a similar computer...the simplest thing to do was dl the necessary programs(hijack this etc) and write them to a cd on my computer than bring it to the other computer to clean it enought to do that virus scans online..as for putting the problematic drive in your own computer...thats probably not the best thing as u never know what ison that drive !!
