here late at night surfing the net and look what i found...

) There is CCTV in every BT phone box:

Don't be fooled into thinking that you are safe because you use a phone box

to phreak. This won't stop them using CCTV to catch ya. I don't know

exactly where the camara is, apparently they use 7, including thermal

imaging on some in london. Although this may seem a bit far fetched to

start with, from what i gather it works something like this:

The pictures go from the box to the local exchange where they are recored,

they are only turned on when someone is in them. The pictures are sent down

a control line from the box to the exchange. This control line tells the

exchange how much money should be in the phone box at the end of the day,

supposedly, this was done for insurence purposes so that they would know how

much to claim for if one of their boxes was broken into. However it serves

a much more sinister purpose now.

If you phreak from a BT payphone you may think your safe but your not. If

you want to phreak from a payphone try to use one that isn't run by BT as

they normally don't have camaras in them (although thats not to say that

they definately won't)

2) BT can and do monitor all phone lines in the UK:

And whats more they don't need a warrent to do it. They can do it totally

legally because all the phone lines in the UK belong to them and they are

allowed to do whatever they want with them. Not only that, but they work

extreemly closely with the police to track down and catch phreaks so be very

careful not to do anything from your home phone line, else they WILL trace

you.

Not only that but BT monitor they're employees very closely. You may

remember a couple of years ago about a person named James Windsor (I think

that was his name) who clamed that he was sacked from BT for posting on

alt.ph.uk. I have been told that he would've been sacked for posting on a

hacking related newsgroup.

3) All traffic lights in the UK have a phone line going into them

Thats right, it is possible to phone into a set of traffic lights using a

normal modem. Although it's not as easy as that though. The prefix for the

modems doesn't follow the standard system of codes. For example, if there

was a set of lights in the middle of london it wouldn't have an 0171 prefix.

I don't know the actual prefix of the lights but it would be resonably easy

to get the numbers. You could try to biege box off the line into the

traffic light and phone 17070, this should repeat back to you the number

that you called from. Then all you have to do is dial up and have a play

with the line :) I've been told that it is impossible to both sets

red or green at the same time, although it would be possible to make them

change very fast and confuse a lot of drivers

/me turns on evil geius mode

ahh *beep*, forgot we wern't on IRC no more :)

4) BT's little black box

Thats right, our encryption systems are flawed because BT has a little black

box that can decrypt any encryption system legal in the UK at the moment.

This little black box is said to run at over 1Thz and can decrypt a lot of

encryption systems in seconds.

This may seem a bit far fetched but if you think about it it's logical that

they could have such a device. I know that AMD Athlon chips can run at 1Ghz

if you push them with a nice cooling system. To buy 1000 of these processors

and have them run in paralell has been done before and that would easily give

you a speed of aproaching 1Thz and would probably cost less than $100,000.

To a company like BT this would be nothing. Even if the cost was nearer to

$1,000,000, which it probably is, do you think a company would hesitate to

spend that ammount of money on a system that could be used to spy on anyone

and decode encrypted systems. The only answer is that we need longer key

lengths, probably near 8192bit keys if we are going to safguard out privacy.

Like i said most of these are at best romours but i thought the public had

the right to know about it even if it isn't true.

duno if this is true but i wouldnt be suprised if it was

Hmmmmm not sure about the credibility of any of that?

For one, Bt are under no circumstances allowed to listen in and trace phone calls unless there are certain cirumstances, one being at the police/courts request, the other is if an individual is being harrassed by menance calls, they can request BT to 'tap' the line, but even then this does not give them the legal right to 'Listen in' all it does is track the number.

There are certain laws protecting the public from instances like this.

Dont know what 'phreaking' is so I can't comment on that. It sounds like a sexual fetish! :D

The point about BT monitoring their employees carefully, well thats the same with every company in the world. Companys have the right to monitor emails and phone calls made by employees using office equipment.

The traffic light trick, is just an urban legend thats been doing the round for years....take no notice.

I like this quote from you!!

I know that AMD Athlon chips can run at 1Ghz if you push them with a nice cooling system

Don't know if your aware but athlons run at 2.6g nowadays! ;)

Also like this :

To a company like BT this would be nothing. Even if the cost was nearer to $1,000,000

Last time I looked BT dealt in £'s?

I don't know which site you found all this on, but somebodys talking out of their *beep* big style!

And thats that! :D

I agree with Damo, this must be a hoax. Can you explain to me how on earth BT can monitor every telephone call in the UK if they don't have an optic fibre system. I use NTL not BT, and would doubt very much that my calls could be monitored by BT.

Can you imagine the staff that would be required to monitor the hundreds of thousands of simultaneous calls being made at one time? If only one in ten homes were on the phone at one time, that would be several million, so you would need a staff of several million.

I honestly think that you don't need to worry.

This is just another one of those 'BIG BROTHER' stories that surface every so often

I've heard from a reliable source that every phone call is monitored but the monitioring system listens only for keywords, nearly everything has a modem is these days a place where I worked has a modem in each of its heating boilerhouses linked to a main computer sending data.

Damo, 'phreaking' is an act of attacking or manipulating the phone system. I can't for the life of me understand why people could even bother doing it anymore.

There are things called red boxes, black boxes, blue boxes etc.. and they replicate the sound of a dialing tone, and somehow you get free phone calls or something of the like.

Search for it : www.google.com :)

On the subject of monitoring, It is my understanding of UK law that if BT DID listen in on your call, they could not use that 'evidence' in a court of law, as they got it in a less than 'cocha' way.

As for the cameras, I'm sorry but Phreaking is really not effective, nor that easy any more (I'm not talking from experience BTW, I just live on the basis of know your enemy) so I extensively doubt they would spend anything on combatting the 'problem'.

If your going to cut and paste.......might make sense to read the post first......................

Memorys a bit woolly ...but there was several well publicised court cases of theft ('phreaking...during the 80's) of US pay-phone calls, in which a small bit of electronics (black box) fooled old pre digital exchanges to pass on phone-calls to another exchange by mimicking an engineers test...and allowing a free phone call...The geezers who made and sold the boxes did a stretch.........................

But this is well old...pre dates Athlons........

As for CCtv it would make sense as an anti-vandalism measure......most of the older boxes smell like toilets in London.....urinals seem to be their main use this days.....the chips are relatively cheap ....no memory or hardware needeed.... just link it to the line....

Why not have a look at this thread.....Tankus told us about a free spell checker that integrates into your browser....although the original info came from Northamuk I think.....anyway, I have it and when I remember I just right click on my text and check it. The only thing you have to watch is that the dictionary is american. :)
