Gagaman Posted March 20, 2005 Report Share Posted March 20, 2005 I have one pc that wont connect to the internet.Here's my setup2 pc's on a homenetwork, connected through a Topcom Webr@cer 880 pstn router.One pc connects without problems to the internet.The other gives a "limited or no connectivity" message.The router has 192.168.1.1 as ip. DHCP is enabled and it gives this adres to the pc thats working ok: 192.168.1.3The pc that cant connect to the internet has this ip: 169.254.109.83.I tried ipconfig /release and ipconfig /renew --> no changei tried adding a fixed ip adres in the lan properties --> it accepts the settings, but no internet connection.If I go to the admin panel of my router, I see that the pc that has no internet connection is listed in the dhcp table with ip 192.1168.1.2 but the 'lease time' is ' expired' --> dont know what this means, but think its no good.Futher information: from the pc that isnt connected to the internet, i cant ping the router nor the other pc.Some help would be appreciated. Agent Smith Posted March 20, 2005 Report Share Posted March 20, 2005 Hi gagaman.First off, excuse me, but it's the first decent drink I've had for a few weeks, so if my post seems strange I will clarify tomorrow.Right, 169.254.x.x is the auto assign address windows will give itself when it cannot get dhcp information. So, I sugest that perhaps you have a dodgy connection to yuor router. The fact that you have tried a manual setting of 192.168.1.x and it still does not work, suggests to me, that either your cable is faulty (ie not plugged in properly, or not correctly wired) or the NIC card or port on the router are at fault.First step is to rule out the cable. I suggest that you use the cable from the pc which is working, and try it on the pc which is giving you problems. As we know thta it is a good connection, simply unplug from the working computer and plug it into the one causing grief, if it works, then I suggest that is where your problem lies.If you are happy that all cables are OK, then try to uninstall the NIC card and then reinstall it again with all new relevant drivers. However, the fact remains, if the card is installed and configured with a manual address ( ie 192.168.1.3 and a valid subnet of 255.255.255.0) and then if you cannot ping 192.168.1.1 (your gateway), then either the NIC card is faulty, the cable is faulty (or the wrong type), the port on the router to which it is connected is faulty, or the whole router is faulty. I'm quite sure that those are allright (I connected my laptop with that cable and port, and that worked fine).My pc is back online now, but I'm using an usb connection to my router, the nic still doesnt work.I'll try the uninstall/reinstall of the nic, later today. Will try that one.I'm at work now, post you later how things worked out.Side question. Now I'm using usb connection to my router instead of the nic. Whats the difference in using that. Agent Smith Posted March 21, 2005 Report Share Posted March 21, 2005 Do I assume that by usb connection you mean a device which plugs into your usb slot, and then you plug the ethernet cable into that? If so, it is simply another form of NIC, just a usb interface instead of a pci one.Personally, I find them very useful for testing things, or for machines which do not have NIC's installed, due to the fact they fit nicely in your pocket along with a pen drive containing all the drivers.It is probably a matter of preference, but I would not want to use one for a longterm solution, although many people do.I have also just had a thought, as your current connection is built into the motherboard, have you checked in the bios to make sure it is not disabled? On the cd that came with it, there is a program to use the usb port to connect to the lan. See pic attached.Btw... your suggestion 'bout the bios makes sense... I upgraded memory a couple of days ago. Had some problems then and did made some changes in thebios. Not sure though were to see of nic is disabled in the bios. I had assumed you were using something like this SMC ExampleI think the only downside to using a permanant usb connection is the fact it will be sharing the usb bus, thus if you have several usb devices, you may see a hit in perfomance.
