McAfee ActiveShield error

Hi everyone,

I have an occasional McAfee error message that just won't go away and is more than an irritation, as it exposes my PC to viruses if I don't check the McAfee Security Center status i.e. make sure that the box status is red not black.

What happens is that everything is fine until I download the occasional update (automatically) and sometimes when this happens, I get no confirmation message along the lines of "Your McAfee software is now up to date. Continue what I was doing".

Also the virusscan isn't re-enabled after the update and my McAfee Security Center box status is black i.e. off.

If I don't notice it, this exposes my PC to viruses :o

The strange thing is one or two updates later, it puts itself right as then I am up to date with no confirmation message but my anti-virus is re-enabled afterwards as I can tell as the McAfee Security Center box status is back to red again. :blink:

Anybody else get this problem or is it an unusual error message?

I have tried seeking help from McAfee themselves with their 'live help chat console' and all they say is to uninstall the software, reboot and install it again.

I have tried this and it doesn't work :angry:

I think it is something to do with Java script as when I updated my Java script a few months ago, this is when I started having the errors.

Any help or advice would be most welcome. :)

Sorry if this doesn't help with your problem, but I use McAfee and I don't get confirmation messages from it... it just updates itself silently every day.

Are you running McAfee VirusScan 8 which is the same as me?

I definitely get a confirmation message after a web update has taken place and I have to click on an option to get rid of it again.

I wish I had sent a screenshot of it now!

I use VirusScan 7.10, and I also have never seen a confirmation message. But then my VS update is scheduled to run between midnight and 1, so even if there is a message, I would never see it.

But I have never experienced that VShield is not active after the update. Maybe you should follow the recommendation on the message and reinstall the product.

I have already tried uninstalling and re-installing it but I still get the same error.

I am convinced it is something to do with Java script or ActiveX controls, as when I go onto certain websites I get an error message along the lines of "Your current ActiveX controls do not allow you to run or download certain programs and as a result the page may not display properly".

I will just have to live with it, as it is only an occasional error and, anyway, I am upgrading to version 9 of the software (which I have already bought), and I am just waiting for my years worth of free updates to expire.

Let's hope I don't get a similar problem with the next version :huh:

Thanks. I see you are running version 8, but yours is the 'Enterprise version' where as mine is the standard 'McAfee VirusScan 2004 version 8' so I assume there is a difference between them?

Just curious.

Ahhh... I didn't think about that. Yours will be designed for a home user so it makes sense that it would tell you what it does. :)

Enterprise version is designed for buisness and to be managed by a network admin or something, not the user.

I seem to have just confused things even more, apologies. ;)
