chongy5
I have a Sony Vaio FX705, and I bought a D-Link DUB-C2 USB2 PCMCIA card. It has a NEC chipset. I put it in the laptop, and all latest drivers and etc. All the things which work fine are USB1, such as flash drives. But when I stick my USB2 Harddrive in, using 2 ports for power and data, the laptop shuts down IMMEDIATLY, like it has had a power surge. I have to take out the battery and so on. If I plugin my iPod mini, it shuts down immediatly. I really need some help, as I need the USB2 for the iPod otherwise its SO slow! Oh yeh, if I stick the data in to USB2 and the power directly from the laptop's USB1, it doesnt really work at all. I am not using any hubs, any amazingly long cabling, and I am supplying sufficient power to the notebook. PLEASE HELP!
scuzzman
Is the laptop USB2.0 capable? What version of Windows?
chongy5
when you mean capable you are asking does it have usb2 ports inbuilt? no. only 2 usb1. I'm using XP Home with SP2 installed.
-pops-
You may be asking for too much power to be supplied to your new USB ports. A single USB connection is supposed to supply 500mA MAX. If you are trying to double this through two USB connections (for your portable hard drive) you are possibly overloading the power capabilities of your laptop.Try using your iPod, or other things that need a single power connection, with your laptop connected to the mains supply. If it works, this may give you an indication that your battery cannot provide the necessary power.
chongy5
sorry to say, but it is always connected to mains power supply. all things which dont work in usb2, work in usb1 ports from laptop.
-pops-
OK. I think, then, that the problem is that the PCMCIA card isn't capable of supplying sufficient power. I'm not familiar with that particular model but I do know that some cards are not designed to give large amounts of power (not even the 500mA of the USB specification) to their add-ons. They are for signal (data) power levels only and rely on external sources such as a powered hub or something like that so, all they do is provide a convenient connection to a machine that would otherwise not be able to use a particular device. As I said, I'm not familiar with that model of card but it may be worth checking to see if what I have said is correct. :)
chongy5
this information is from the official website pops:Supplied Current: 500mA per port you can obtain it here: D-Link DUB-C2
-pops-
Oh! I'm stuck then unless it is the laptop that is unable to provide sufficient current to the PCMCIA card.
